Art of Wil Rees was different in character when it comes to Space Marines than typical RT Space Marine art. He depicted them in heroic proportions with small heads and massive torsos.
He also depicted Space Marines as terrifying warriors capable of shrugging off small arms fire:
Note how the dying Space Marine is hit by a much thicker ray suggesting a heavy weapon like lascannon.
Another thing is the bizarre weapon.

This is an image by Dave Gallagher from the article The Creation of Space Marines. It was clearly inspired by how Wil Rees depicted marines.
It somewhat feels like they reached towards the darker aspects of Rogue Trader when creating 3rd ed. I remember seeing one of images from the article on Dave Gallagher's instagram where he said he had disagreements with others over non-standard weapons.
Art by Wil Rees was included in Inquis Exterminatus so it certainly was considered important.
