What size game for beginner to RT?

My wife has taken an interest in my hobby after watching me paint for years. She flipped though my RT book and decided (based solely on the art) that that's what she wants to play, which of course delighted me.

My question is, what would be a good sized game to get her introduced? I've read various places that single or two squad per side games work really well.

In your shoes, I’d set up a game of Inquisimunda using RT era figures with a gang/squad each. I’d also either play collaboratively or let her win. Furthermore, I’d not make any loser signs or do any victory dances for fear of putting her off future games and/or her hitting me.

i recommend a squad and support element apiece. so about ten grunts, depending on what species and troop types you are playing and a dreadnought or lightly armoured vehicle. the squads can then be split in two, if desired, for greater tactical flexibility.

So it sounds like not matter what a small game of say 10 to 15 figures per side for a first blush. I'll run by a game of Inquisimunda by her but she tends to make her mind up based on the "look" of things and she really dug the aesthetic of RT. She's played some Song of Blades and Heroes with me so she's not totally unfamiliar to miniatures games.

I thought you had to use every RT model you owned for your first game! My first game was GM'd by my cousin and we had Marines, Squats, a few Eldar and a couple of beasties ... and of course a lot of Cladonia rangiferina. I believe the rules element was more of an optional extra in that game, but certainly all the models he had needed to be used ;)

On a more serious note, a couple of squads/teams a side and a decent mission would make for a good game, rescue a comrade, or retrieve an artefact or something simple like that would probably be good.

Alternatively, you could roll something up using the plot generator in the back of the book. Make it something fun where she has a goal and you basically play a GM running NPCs. There are SO many good scenarios in the back. As has been elsewhere suggested, use the "let the wookie win" strategy. For a teaching game that's probably always the right way to go.

I think pretty much all of us back when it came out learnt to play by running through the Battle at the Farm from the book. It's designed as an introductory scenario, and has all the fluff written already to make for an enjoyable first game.

I'd suggest her playing the Marine side, as there are fewer models and the win conditions are a bit simpler so it's less to concentrate on when you're playing for the first time.

You know, I suppose a good question is what sort of game, if any, has she played before? Or what sorts of sci-fi stories has she enjoyed? You might go in different directions if she's a fan of Firefly than if she's a fan of Dune, say. Or if she likes strategy board games or pencil and paper roll playing. Write to your audience, as it were. :) And good luck!

I like the idea of running a scenario as the GM and letting her play against it. As to her previous gaming experience, she likes board games of all sorts and she has enjoyed the handful of times we've played Song of Blades and Heroes. When it comes to sci fi she likes Star Wars, Aliens, Terminator, and she really digs the whole dark fairy tale vibe when it comes to fantasy.

If she likes fairy tales and you're comfortable playing as a game master you could always pick a choice fairy tale or myth and rewrite it in space. Perhaps Captain Hoode and her crew are on a mercy mission delivering supplies to a quarantined planet unaware that the dread pirate Caldo Lupino has struck and is presently impersonating the shuttleport staff and holding the mayor hostage in order to get the goods . . . and the ship. So many possibilities.
