Mostly one at a time, depends what kind of game we want to play and with who. No house rules per se but we play fast and loose, with narrative winning out every time. If something would be cool then it goes.

I started with 2nd, dropped out with third, cameback with sixth played up to eigth and finally dropped back to third with the occassional game of fourth, out of them all I'm split between 6th and eigth, because the fights don't come down to a slogging match, but I mostly play third.

3rd. You can really be creative when creating your army + it has a full Norse army list. And the realm of chaos books are so much fun.
I'm still open to 4th or 5th, never saw much difference in the rules other than full rank going from 5 models to 4. But I never had the 4th magic supplement.

I'll admit 6th was a very polished ruleset, but it was too restrictive for my tastes (yes, I like my god heroes). This is also were you needed to buy mass legions of troops to be able to field an army. For example I just finished painting 7 Nurgle warriors for 3rd edition at a whooping 520 points. For 520 points I'd get 37 Chaos warriors in 6th edition. Smart financial move on Gw's behalf. But who's got the time to paint all that in this day and age?

Some of the major differences for me between 3rd and 4th:

In 4th chargers attack first, Initiave is no longer the decider.
A shed load of weapons vanished.
Artillery and war machine rules changed quite a bit.
The loss of 3 stats, it can be a important, after all I would expect halfings for example to have a better WP than LD.
As you say magic was a whole new thing, too much for me, though I did like racial magic rather than everyone doing the same stuff.

I play 3rd rules with a few units from 4th ported backwards.

Started with 3rd. Vast majority of my WFB was 4th and 5th. The later editions I did the odd game. Now full circle and would probably aim for 3rd edition games (although I did pick up a somewhat musty copy of the 4th edition rulebook/bestiary late last year).

I only ever had 2nd Edition. We played a mash up of 2nd and 3rd since I had 2nd edition and my friend had bought 3rd. Probably never played a proper game of either by the correct rules!

Don't play Warhammer at all these days, Dragon / Lion Rampant does the job just as well for me.
