Hello all,
Recently, I've been thinking about how the points values for elite troops and characters are calculated. I realise that the points values can be amended at will to suit my own purposes - such is the glory of Oldhammer - and I'd like your input as I intend to do just that!
I'll use the points value for a human (5) in all my examples except where noted. This is referred to as the Base Cost (BC).
Elites in the Main Rules:
Elites are costed at BC + BC*Elite Level if BC is 10 or less
Characters with BC 10 or more are BC+10*Elite Level
Elites in the Army Book:
Elites are costed at BC + 1*Elite Level.
Characters:
Characters are costed at BC + BC*Character Level if BC is 10 or less
Characters with BC 10 or more are BC+10*Character Level
So it is clear that Elite troops are vastly under-costed in the Army Book compared to the Rulebook - supposedly kept in check by the restrictions of the army lists themselves (which, let's face it are mostly seen as just guidelines anyway). Therefore you end up with situations where you can buy a +4 Elite for 9 points which is almost a match for a 5 Hero at 30pts, lacking only a point of BS or A. This effect is more pronounced the more expensive the model is up to a point.
This also makes low level characters seem over-costed in comparison. You'd never have a 5 Hero leading your +4 Knights, would you? Maybe they are too expensive for what you get?
So I'm throwing this open to the Oldhammer brain trust. How much should Elites and Characters cost, and why?
