WFB 3rd Edition: Catapults

So you roll a d20 and 1-12 is deviation in that direction, 13+ is a hit.
Sorted no ambiguity there.

Speculative fire though, it says you roll double deviation, but does not say if you roll to hit in the first instance.
Do they always deviate and thus double deviate, of do you roll to hit as normal and if they deviate it is then double?

good question. i'm not sure if there is an official answer, but i would rule that you roll to hit. if you score a hit the shot is subject to single deviation, if it misses then double deviation.

That seems sensible.

I don't know why, but I have this sentence written in my rulebook:

Page 109, Speculative fire:

Place the area template and roll to hit as normal, but if the score is 1-16 shot deviates (2d12). Use the modified template.
(Italic text is mine).

As I only write in my books when it comes from a trusted source, I think I took it from an official FAQ, a WD battle report or something like that. :)

Hope this helps!

The more I read that the more it rings a vague bell...
I will go hunting!
