Warhammer Fantasy Crossbows vs Handguns

Which or these do you personally prefer for ranged shooting?

In small battles do you find yourself taking crossbows over handguns or the other way around? I myself am setting up a 1,000 point dwarf army and im taking Crossbowdwarfs a.k.a Quarellers over Handguns (or Rangers and their axes)...

Is there a general consensis on which is generally better? I know it is all situational - i am just looking for some feedback from experienced players...

Without reviewing the stats and points, my initial response would be choose Xbows over gunpowder weapons, as their just too easily countered - cause rain :lol:

Depends upon edition as earlier version hand guns take a turn to reload which is poo so generally I'd pick crossbows as they're more reliable.
 
I really only play 3rd edtion, and in that, crossbows don't tend to explode, unlike gunpowder weapons. ;)

Having said that I tend to put Gunpowder weapons in whatever armies I can, purely because I like to think that whatever army I'm playing would want to have the most advanced weapons at their disposal, regardless of the flaws. A smaller, recce force may go with their old reliable choices though.
 
Not sure what the stats for 'hand guns' are. But If I were a WFB2E Dwarf, and my choice between a blunderbuss and crossbow, I'd probably take the crossbow. Doesn't blow up in your face and the range is longer. They're both slow, so can't move/fire in the same turn. I think that's a reasonable simulation of early firearms.

But, I'd house rule that a unit firing black-powder weapons on an enemy that doesn't have them causes Fear. The morale effects of the great noise and smoke being greater than the physical damage. Maybe a bonus against unarmoured cavalry (the horse that gets ripped up)

Great house rule. Consistent with history, I think.
