[Warfork Fantasy Battles] Dwarven Road

I have Hirst Arts' Mold #210 Cobblestone, which I ordered back in 2010. I am not exactly sure when I had cast all the tiles I needed for the modular roads I had in mind, but I guess it was at least 10 years ago. At some point I had glued the modules (lying them on the cobblestone side, to get a level surface, thus compensating for the bottoms not having been screaped to the same height by me consistently). Some time later I had the MDF sheets cut in the DIY store, to mount the segments on.


Then, this was always "the next" quick side project when my current project was finished. And then it was the next again... and again...


Now, some 10 years later, I actually need the roads for the next scenario I intend to play. So I set to work.

And this is what I ended up with:


While I was working on the road tiles, I saw the test prints of dwarf models, which I had used to find the correct size to print the models to fit with the dwarves I already had. I had the faint idea, to mount them somehow and use as statues. Well... what better place to have dwarven statues than besides a dwarven road...?


So I quickly got out my Proxxon, cut strips of shapes, and then many, many slices of these shapes; ten blocks and 3 times 40 decorative slabs.


The statues received some under colouring in violet (bottom) and blue (top), with some green (for moss etc.) on the very bottom.


I used the same green to simulate growth on the road banks, and a creamy, beige colour was applied in spots to simulate dust.


Both statues and roads then got airbrushed in two different greys.



Everything got an indiscriminate black/brown oil wash mix, with green oil wash being applied intentionally to specific areas, again for a moss like effect.




Left the airbrushed tile, the two on the right have the oil washes applied.



I applied three different layers of Krautcover Scenics base mixes, stones, grey aquarium sand and grass tufts to the bases, in some places "overgrowing" the roads or statues. The final step was to apply two different tones of dust pigments to the roads for even more surface variation.

This is how the interlocking of the tiles looks like from close up. Some of the cobblestone tiles' jagged edges project over the MDF-base, the more recessed ones leave ~2mm of MDF showing. So there is no gap between tiles where you can see the underlying surface; the gap you see only shows the underlying MDF which was painted a very dark brown/black.


The connections are not invisible, but could be much more obvious.

Overall I am quite happy with the result; the only thing I would wish for is for the roads not to look this angular. But this is inherent in using square cast blocks.
 
Very nice! Lovely natural tones on the stone. I think dwarves would build very regular, straight roads so I don't think that's a problem. If they're plaster casts I guess you could always nibble away at the edges with a pair of pliers to create curved pieces.
 
they have really come out well. the join design from the moulds works well too, cause it more looks like natural road splitting (something... well.. anyone in England, even more now, knows all too much about)
