War Machines in WFB 3rd

This might be daft question, but what "force" type do War Machines get classed as in Warhammer Armies?
I assume they are classes as "Rank & File" models rather than a type of their own?

Yup.

I am guessing you are looking at points and that armies say x on rank and file, and y on heroes, and z on allies, etc?

Exactly.
The name of the force type is misleading is all. War Machines don't appear to be rank & file...

In warhammer armies, everything that has a little unit card/illustration is in the rank and file section. ?

and war machines are in the rank and file section:

yep. War Machines come under Rank & File, being lumped together. Once you have your compulsory troops, you could build your army around war machines if you wanted ^_^ within points of course
