Size comparison: Villagers and Townsfolk

There seems to be plenty of love hereabouts for the old Citadel townsfolk and villagers with some frustration about getting hold of them and the asking prices. As a fellow admirer, I thought it might be interesting to show some size comparisons with other available ranges. Perhaps it will help people to scratch their villager itch more readily?

Here are a few photos of some of the usual suspects on a 10mm grid from my pile of opportunity. Hopefully, some of you will add to this with your own size comparisons against ranges that I haven't got around to adding to my stash yet.

Barmen

C46 Landlord, Hasslefree, Otherworld

Barmaids

C46 Innkeeper's wife, Hasslefree, Otherworld, Dunkeldorf

Minstrels

C46 Bard, C46 Travelling Player Lute Hero, Hasslefree, Dunkeldorf

Strumpets

C46 Libertine, Hasslefree, Dunkeldorf, Otherworld

Crones

C46 Old Hag, Hasslefree, Dunkeldorf, Otherworld

Dunkeldorf Miniatures
A range created by the lovely people at King Games in Denmark and funded by a number of successful Kickstarters over the last few years. Very inspired by WFRP. Contains a wide variety of characters, plenty of females, some demi-humans and lots of animals and scenery. Highly recommended but they don’t mix well with Oldhammer figures as they’re far too strapping.

Hasslefree Miniatures
A company with lots of great figures mainly sculpted by Kev White (ex-GW painter and now with Forge World). They have a small range of fantasy villagers which I think fit pretty well with Oldhammer figures. They used to have a stellar reputation for customer service but seem to be catching a lot of flak for it these days. So, caveat emptor and all that.

Otherworld Miniatures
The Old School AD&D figure company though no longer a going concern as the owner retired. However, Crooked Dice recently announced that they had acquired the whole NPC range of tavern and townsfolk so they should be available again soon. Many of these were sculpted by Ian Mountain. A nice and cohesive little range. Unfortunately, they’re too tall to mix with Oldhammer figures for me. Better, perhaps, with Middlehammer ones?

I've got a bunch of civilians/villagers from different manufacturers but not a single one from Citadel's oldhammer years to put next to them.
A ruler or some generic oldhammer mini would probably suffice to give an idea of the scale, but many of those minis I have are no longer in production either (Black Cat Bases and Westfalia spring to mind), which leaves me wondering would it make any sense for me to take photos of these?

Sidenote: I like Dunkeldorf and Otherworld sculpts a lot, but their scale looks like they'd be rather big even for 28mm minis of middlehammer era.

Probably not as I assume it would be even harder to source other manufacturer’s OOP figures than Citadel ones.

With regards to your side note, that probably deserves its own thread. I have plenty of Dunkeldorf, Otherworld and Mordheim figures plus a smartphone ;)

Foundry have some nice Oldhammer-scale-appropriate townsfolk. Old Glory also work well scale wise, for background grotty peasants. Then there's Midlam's beautiful offerings of course, including abhumans.

That's what I was thinking too. ;) Quick look at Black Cat ones shows they'd be more in line with Otherworld and Dunkeldorf anyway.
I second Fimm, though can't say I have many original miniatures from Midlam (mostly those they bought from Mega Miniatures (i.e. ex-Hobby Products/ Metal Magic ranges) when they closed), but those I have seem almost perfect fit with oldhammer as does those HP ones, too.

Scotia Grendel has some (possibly) suitable minis in their fantasy personalities range. I have some of those not-LoTR minis (What? Balbo and Odorf are very common names for halflings! Pure coincidence if they sound familiar. This bit of comedy was back when they were sold by Black Tree) and they'd work alright. I've also occasionally been wondering where did humans from SHQ's fantasy range end up and now I know. Never bought any but there's definitely some interesting characters among them.

Dunkeldorf minis look like they are close to or more than 30mm to eyes and, again from my very limited experience, Otherworld seems to be very inconsistent in scale. Sometimes buying miniatures feels more like gambling in hopes you end up with stuff that fits your current interest.

Always nice to see a good comparison. I have a couple of Midlam but not really many which can be used for such scale..

Sure, why not?

Yes, there or thereabouts. It’s a big range & they’ve used a few different sculptors. Most are by Sonny Bundgaard but there is some variety in style etc.

Otherworld aimed for 5mm to the foot with their range. However, they used loads of sculptors (e.g. Kev Adams, Kev White, Paul Muller, David Soderquist etc) each with their own recognisable style. Your average Kev Adams is a lot chunkier than your average Muller or Soderquist sculpt.

Am surprised Foundary doesn’t have the townsfolk molds in their catalogue as the are not explicitly Warhammer? Or perhaps they have them lost in the back room waiting to be catalogued and recast?!? :?

That size difference is just within human range as he is a bulky axe man.

It might just be me, but I do get the feeling Foundry have more on sale then they put on their site. Also there are bound to be models which they, for whatever reason, don't stock up on.

I have no real issues using him, but looking at the website photo, all the models seem that big, and for me that makes the others too big to be regular sized.

Here's my contribution. Line marks 25mm and fighter should be on eye-level with it.

001.jpg
GW fighter, Scotia Grendel Barliman, Midlam barmaid, GW talisman merchant, Midlam farmer, Scotia Grendel Beregond

002.jpg
GW, Foundry viking villager, GW, Foundry germanic woman, Foundry germanic woman

003.jpg
GW, Grenadier friar Tuck, GW, Mega Miniatures(?) monk, Grenadier bishop, Mega Miniatures(?) priest

004.jpg
Gw, West Wind harlot, Grenadier(?), GW, Reaper courtesan, West Wind harlot

Your grid has me scratching my head as squared paper is usually 5mm here.

Those Foundry fish fraus by Mark Copplestone are great. As are the wailing women from the same range. They may be a bit primitive even for Stirland though ;)

Things making sense and life easier? How quaint.

Yes, they are indeed lovely sculpts but I must agree maybe not best fit for Warhammer. I've been avoiding too renaissance looking civilians and mostly bought them from dark ages and (early) medievals ranges to go with the theme I'm after.
