Travelling players/townsfolk

First three models from a bunch I'm doing as a commission. I love these oldies and it's far too easy to spend too much time on them, but I can't help it. You just don't see faces sculpted like these anymore. I think in the quest for anatomical perfection modern sculptors have lost some of the fun of a good caricature. They also paint up really nicely and you don't have to spend ages trying to make a largely flat face look 3D.

I place full responsibility for removing the base tags on the client who requested I butcher them so as to mount them on resin bases. ;)

To be honest I don't care whether a model has it's tag or not but then I'm not quite that far gone as a collector.

Plenty more to come.

These look great...I like the bloke in the middle in particular. and I fully agree with you on the anatomical correctness ruining plenty of sculpts these days....you just can't get characters like these.

In a post on LAF you mentioned that you were now using VMC USA Tan Earth as your base for Caucasian flesh....what are you mixing with it to highlight it? Still using Deneb Stone?

Cheers!

Lovely minis. Stunning painting.
Tags smags ... it's not like anyone's ever going to rip them off the bases to sell them.

I'm using good old VGC Bonewhite (just about run out of Bonewhite, my bottle is blowing bubbles now and my brushes wore out last week - hurry up Wayland!!!) for highlighting and then a little white followed by a glaze of GW ogryn flesh. That's the old wash thinned with water.

Glad everyone approves of the oldies (though not surprising here I suppose. I've just had my first 'drink' in 10 months so I'm allowed to be dumb ;) ).

So does that mean you'll be changing the name from stone cold lead to half pissed lead?

Also ... why is the middle guy holding his bollox?

2 glasses of wine and I'm done. None of that chasing the bottom of the bottle and then wondering if I'll croak in the night.

I've no idea what that guy's holding but it looks like he's left teeth marks in it. I tried to make it look like a ham hock or something but it does look a bit nob and balls. Maybe those old sculpts do sometimes lack definition.

Excellent painting job (and thanks for the receipe of your flesh tones)

You're welcome

I'm always happy to share paint recipes and wot not (I get the impression not everybody does though).

Yes agreed...thanks for clearing that up. I like the tanner base color...closer to what I do already...the Ogryn flesh wash is something I don't have though...does it fall between gryphone sepia and Delvan mud?

Yeah it's a kind of reddish brown. If you have all three then you've got a good selection for tinting your flesh tones.

A few more models done. Part of me wishes it was still 1987... as far as miniatures go anyway. ;)
Damn fine work, as always! Only small critique I can think of is that the guy with the open shirt could do with a paler chest and belly compared to face and arms/hands. As it is now, the torso looks darker than the other parts. Could just be the photo, of course.

Got all the models finished off now so here's the end result. Really enjoyed doing these and I ended up putting a little more work into them than I originally planned (due to the price agreed with the client).

Magnifient. You are a talented chap. I dream of producing minis like this.

Do you paint mid tone then blend the shade and highlights or start dark and blend all the way up?

Start dark and blend up. I sometimes go back and darken recesses or add a little extra depth with a wash or glaze though.

I learned to layer from the old Heroes for Wargames book and that was all based on starting with a darker shade base coat and working up over it.
