Uploads can be up to 3MB in size - that should be more than enough for a good size picture. If you resize a copy down to 1000-2000px that will be more than enough to show it off and will be in the 100s of KB for a JPEG image. Plenty of tools online if you can't do a resize on your device, for instance a quick search turned up https://imageresizer.com (no idea how good they are, but a test showed they worked)
