Titans anyone? (Armorcast)

Since it's a bit of a rarity to see Armorcast titans up for sale in the UK I thought I might note the following listings for others:

Way overpriced in my humble opinion, but hey ho. Pretty sure I've seen photos of the red Warhound online before somewhere or other. Nice that the Reaver is bare resin and even nicer the feet aren't stuck on (yet). Will be interesting to see if they sell quickly or linger.

Goofy big models!

Mileage may vary, but sorry the “soft” upscaling of the Epic mini designs doesn’t really inspire me to spend that much on them. Am sure there are cheaper 3d prints available for much less.

yeah.. they would be much better if some of the detail which couldn't be put on the epic mini, without being stupid and just added extra unrealistic stuff (ugh.. modern transformers like to be stupid and add thick panel lines which make no sense.. so instead of a single piece panel which makes sense and works fine, they make it into a bunch of smaller panels.. which are much weaker construction wise and since they are robotic lifeforms, not some robot, it gets worse ¬_¬ it's like when people think 'rust' battle damage for transformers is good.. that's basically like putting scabs on a figure. probably okay for nurgle but you think they would just walk around like that?... stupid.. they keep forgetting they are living robotic lifeforms..

anyway.. for that price, I would want some details though.. man, does that reaver look like it would be easy to beat in battle with them thin exposed upper legs.. again, like some modern transformers where they like to have exposed gears and tubes which are just huge weak spots..

plus, probely cause they look a bit vinyl, they are pretty soft looking which for that price, I wouldn't have expected

The resin is hard, do you mean the details? As Brother Meredith says they were simply upscales design wise of the EPIC designs. You can add some detailing to them fairly easily, I added a few bits on my painted Reaver and my mostly painted Warhound is quite heavily customised. I'd been thinking I might keep the others cleaner when I eventually get to them. They are in reality slightly daft designs - they just don't somehow look so daft in EPIC scale.

I don't know why but I do have a soft spot for these models, I remember the early days of the Internet looking at the Armorcast website. Although I'm sure I'd seen a flyer before then or something, because for a while you could have them shipped to the UK. Still as a youngster the cost and practicalities of it made it a bit of a dream! I do like the new Titan designs and Forge World models, but the costs are prohibitive and whilst I'd quite like them it's not enough to overcome the money. I expect had I stayed playing 40K and had a modern army it'd be backed up with some Titans by now!

^_^

yeah, details wise it just kinda looked more like Vinyl, which softens details a fair bit (I got some nice Vinyl Models painted up, but atleast one I need to finish sometime but I wasn't impressed with how it was turning out)

Critique away! They are certainly quite goofy especially compared to the current titans and the total lack of "scale" detailing is a bit hard to figure out. Would they have looked wrong with detailing or would it have made them richer models? It's not like Oldhammer didn't have some examples of detailing in it - there was that awesome Rhino conversion in one of the (I think) Fantasy Miniatures books that's super detailed out on the interior and it doesn't seem out of place. Also the vehicle plastic kits are reasonably detailed. So it probably could have been done. I suppose in some ways the new/current Titans are really that in many ways - the earlier concept done in more detail.

Upscaling EPIC could be its whole entire thread, it was only at BOYL this year that I noticed the Orc battlewagons (Gobsmasher was it?) in the bottom of the display case behind the WFB3 game we played. There was for a while quite a lot of pollination from EPIC up into 28mm in that scratch build arena. I've a few STL fan sculpts of the old Titans, but none that are actually great, although I expect there are some out there. My favourite scratch built titans were the Star Wars / Zoids war hounds, I couldn't stop looking at those when the pictures were published.

Thinking of scratch builds I've never seen a really good "old" Warlord Titan. Obviously there was the prototype Armorcast (if it was Armorcast at that point, the history is a little confusing) Warlord, which I assume was another Blasi sculpt, but it just doesn't look right. It may well technically be "correct" (I don't know), but it looks silly - I guess a bit like the way the Warhound weapons look a bit silly in 28mm, but somehow you don't question it in EPIC. Maybe we'll find someone here one day that'll do a stunning scratch build? I guess with 3D scanning these days it'd be somewhat trivial (in the grand scheme of things) to scan an old plastic Warlord and tidy up a model to print.

I really like these models - I've one of each - they're great fun to build and paint, being fairly simple to put together.

Partly I like anything large as my eyesight struggles with real minis and I can cope with these!

It's all sci-fi, so you have to be forgiving, but the proportions of barrel-to-weapon make you wonder where the ammo is for the autocannon!

The Warhound can be posed to be running which adds a lot to the model, while the Reaver needs to be given a 'swagger' look to be at all sensible. I've got a Merlyn 'Iron Armour' head on mine and more recently added a launchpad from https://www.battlecastings.com/ so it can carry troops or a land speeder.

I agree they look pricey. It is hard to find a game to run them in as titans are uncommon, so you would need to be quite driven to spend that much, or to have a decent rival to go up against.

We're hopefully going to run a Titanomachy / heroic battle at BOYL next year in RT. The trick with an RT battle is efficiency, so less complex rules for bigger models are useful.

Ah, Meaning to make the ork vehicle from WD ^_^ but I haven't really gotten to do much on my Ork army

Problem I've seen with some 'modern' takes on detailing is.. They are modern idea of Detailing. which can be awful.. My personal view is look at the original art. That has more detail then the minis, without being stupid. Use that as what it should look like ^_^

I liked the old honour ribbons / medals they had.

In the 42nd century, there is only war.. and giant Bee hives for all that wax, and tons of metal production, and in fact more people in refineries then actively fighting. ^_^

but yep, no problem there

That's why RT makes more sense than 10th edition. You need trade and alien alliances to keep the supply lines open. Having titans with no food is pointless.

Also love the idea of giant beehives. With titanic bees.

I'm sensing cross thread pollination here!

That's not a site I've ever seen before, damn you! :) Now I really want the scout striders and alternate head! Maybe I'll email them to see if they are still making and shipping internationally and treat myself.

Sprawling trade empires exist in the background, but just don’t make particularly exciting basis for a wargame. ;)
Well quite - it felt like Rick Priestly's RT had a nice handle on necessity making allies of empires, rather than the puritanical battle lists and xenophobia.

I must say though, having civvies to protect makes for a more realistic and strategic game. Bit like having a wagon train in the old WFB.

Just had an email back, still going! So I suspect I might have to be really bad and get some bits and just pretend that customs fees don't exist and VAT and everything else that will make it horribly expensive. The reviews I saw suggest the mold quality is less than stunning and the 3D prints really need further cleanup before being used as masters (a problem I've seen with other companies), but dang I have a soft spot for those quirky scouts and the styling is spot on.
