Tilean Militia pikemen

These are Wargames Foundry figures from a short lived line which I doubt they will continue to produce because they are 'odd' BUT they are Renaissance Italians so I had to have them for my Tilean Campaign. I got them, with others, at the Oldhammer event.

I wanted them to look like militia raised from a city's able bodied men, and so I painted them in ever colour I had and could create so that they did not appear uniform, or in a certain livery. Yes, they share certain fashions, cut of their doublets etc, but there are orange, yellow, burgundy, red, light blue, dark blue, stripy, green, black, brown, pink, purple and other colours in there. I have not quite completed them - they need a standard in the standard bearer's hand but I will put that on when they fight their first battle - I don't yet know which of the several NPC cities they might fight for, so I don't know which standard they need.

Here they are in one 6 x 6 block...

Here's the front rank with the scarface standard bearer visible plus the prettily attired officers and drummers...

Here in a 1x3 formation simply because it makes them look even more numerous!

I tried something this time which I have never done before. Their pikes are the bristles off a brush (thanks to a mate who found a brown brush just right for me after I moaned about the fact I could not find one in three hardware stores). I cut spear heads off old sprues, drilled holes in so that I could slot them onto the bristles, then glued them on. Being brown I do not need to paint them, which is good 'cos they are bendy and the paint would flake off as a consequence. Being a re-enactor of the pike a shot period, I think the slightly bent look is very realistic.

I like em, neatly and brightly executed. You have pulled off the militia look well. You are going to need a big movement tray for that lot!

I really like these, they really look like you have described. I love the style you have painted them in, with the bright colours and black lining. It's been executed really well. I also love the stripes shirts on the more well to do officers. I find units like this really inspiring. And the fact that they are tileans just makes me want to get my nightmare legion done even more!

I love the idea for the pikes too. I have a heap of home made cast skeletons I might try that on, as their soft lead weapons just bend too easily.

Very nice stuff Padre!

Great stuff Padre. Great idea for the pike, but how strong are they? I have a bunch of spear armed orcs that I was considering converting to pike but wasn't sure if bristles were strong enough.

You've made some very questionable mini's look very impressive. I've always loved Italian pike and I've got a couple of units myself. Lovely stuff!

Thanks muchly for the comments, guys.

@ JustJohn: You have to get the right sort of brush - a plastic bristle, brown and of a sufficient length. I couldn't find one myself but my mate heard me complaining and saw just the right sort of brush in a hardware store in York. It was very considerate of him. Bonuses = drilled tiny holes in the lopped off spear ends then used normal polystyrene glue when slotting the bristles in. And yes they (seem) strong enough. And when they bend, the paint doesn't chip off 'cos there is no paint!

I am tempted to replace about 100 very old riders' leads spears (ridiculous bendy) with these bristles. But atm, I have far too many pressing projects that are higher on my list of things to do.

@Just John: you're going to try and train your orcs to use pikes? That'll never work! :)

@Padre: great unit. The pikes give them just the right degree of uniformity to offset the individuality of the paint scheme.

Re: First comment ...
Orcs should be ok with them if I have managed to train goblins to use them ...

(There were rules for goblin pikes in the campaign army list - basically slightly less good pikes, due to the fact that goblins were on the end of them.)

Re: Second comment ...
That was what I wanted. As well as the background/story reason that the city would provide the pikes (en masse) but not uniforms.

Ok, as a result of that I think I have decided to convert some of the old plastic singlepose plastic goblins into pike. I have about 100 of them and could never figure out what to do with them.

Oh and Grumdril - Hah! Don't dis da orcs & goblins. If I thought I had a chance of making it I'd challenge you to a duel in Nottingham

They are, I think, still my favourite ever unit conversion. Some more shots ...

And in action in a one off game ...

(You can see my pirate goblins in this shot, on the other side of the orc mob.)

@Just John: you're on - if you can make it, and if I can do a lot more painting in the meantime than I'm managing at the moment... :(
