[The Woods] - Mount Silence at Night - Mission 2

I'm trying to dedicate a set time for solo gaming for a number of reasons but anyway. Finally Mission 2!

Mission 2 - The Gauntlet. Pretty much the same setup as the first mission, the only differences is the goal is now much harder. In the first mission, your lone guard had to escape the tunnels with his life. This time, he needs to lock the reinforced door. In theory, this gives you less space needed to travel as instead of exiting the room, and walking around all the way to the exit, the reinforced door is much closer and once it's locked, you win... Problem is, getting it locked.

For some reason, the Idiot David was patrolling alone again in the same area as last time. Not having learnt his lesson but learnt something, he decided this time to lock the door to try to buy the other gnomes from time. Not reminding that last time he tried that the goblins just wasted the door in no-time before he could flee. Well, I guess admin roles don't require quick thinking.

(Ignore the reinforced door, it's closed even though I put it laying down which I do for opened doors)

Full discloser, I played this mission 3 times. I did think about replaying the first cause of a small mistake but that was just down to the gobbos being stupid so that'll slide. However, this time they were much smarter.. even if that doesn't mind much. each time was kinda the same with only minor variation really, but that doesn't

David tried to get to the reinforced door as fast as possible but as he moves 5 squares at a time, and the goblins more 8, his short little stubby legs didn't do him any favours and he came face to face with his enemy.

The first round of combat caused 3 points of damage onto the rubberly goblin, off to a good start, but the others were fast approaching and with the high endurance, he didn't have time to mess around.

The problem was, the Goblin was able to get in a lucky swing with his axe and floored the Gnome, leaving him laying on the stone floor. Standing back up, he tried again against the gobbo and scored a great hit, taking another 3 more points off him, Fantastic! 2 rounds and both gave the maximum possible, but this still left it with 2 points left.

Using all of his stamina, the Goblin was able to yet again floor him, having his beard now well and truly covered in stone dust and his eyes clearly going a bit blurry.

What made matters worse, was he could see Gobbos 2 and 3 coming up close behind. His next turn, he was able to get back up and take out Numba 1! then move up towards Numba 2. If he could keep up his strength, he could slowly push them back and get that door locked.

However it didn't take long before a new gobba joined the back of the pack and his fighting with Numba 2 wasn't going quite as well. While he was scoring the odd hit, Numba 2 roared at him, giving him a much better defence roll against one swing and this appeared to knock some of his new found confidence away from him as while he weakened the goblin to within an inch of his life (well, 2 endurance out of 8 left), the Gobbo was able to weaken him enough to take him out.

David was out and the Goblins free to carry on towards the next levels of the mountain.

So... yeah.. this one is hard now I got the movement for the Gobbos right (oh, I was only using 3 by the way. not that it would have made too much difference). With the movement, I think the first mission wouldn't have gone too much difference in that he could still run away, but no chance of getting to that door before the goblins get out and then you kinda need to take out a minimum of 3 goblins (you can try to push back the 4th) before you are able to get to that door. Might give it another try or just move on to mission 3.

So... are you moving goblins onto the board as in the first mission? On the map the goblins start on the board and the gnome has to dodge past them to get to the door.

... I though something was odd.. I seam to have two copies of this mission... Did you make a mistake then re-upload a file? the print friendly version I have of the mission has the same map from the first mission.. which I felt a couple of bits were a bit odd...
Ah.. yes.. looking at the file creation dates.. the current version of the mission PDF was created on the 10th.. when the mission was released on the 8th ^_^ when I printed of a copy to make playing easier, I just printed the PDF and didn't double check with the mission that was released on the page...

well, Just like HQ with the print errors then ^_^

Ah yes, you must have got an 'early' edition with the wrong map. Sorry! No wonder your gnome had a tough time of it!

Okay, David Woke up from a bad Dream only to notice, while the surroundings were different, his goal was the same. Maybe a Prophetic dream? He didn't know, but either way, He had to stop these goblins from getting to the higher levels.

(I also tried to see if I could improve my camera quality cause I'm not sure why things look soo blurry like it's had camera based digital zoom but.. didn't seam to make much difference.. Camera isn't meant to be this bad but oh well)

David has to go from his starting point, down the corridor in front, through the door to the open arch way, through that room to the door, through that door to the reinforced door, which he then has to lock, ideally from the other side but can be from the inside.

David decided to try to make a run for it after his first encounter and his dream.

(While he looks like it, he really stopped facing the other direction but I took the photo a bit early). He stopped 1 square short to keep some stamina back for defence.

But it wasn't long before the first Goblin was able to come up and wack him one.. taking 2 points of endurance from him, not a great start. While he was dealing with this first one, 3 more started to come towards him. This left David with a choice.. there was no way he was going to get out of the face that he was going to be covered in Gobbos soon, with two points of attack against him. So he decided to just try to press forwards towards the door.

IMG_20250402_133828_HDR.jpg
He decided to face towards a wall, with his back to the other wall, open the door to his side and attack as he could do this sideways. Attacking with an extra die due to stamina, the Gobbo had already used up his stamina in movement. Swinging his sword, he scored a great hit, doing 3 points of Damage.. However, with his 8 endurance due to being a goblin, Numba 3 took it in his stride.

The goblin coming up on his left, came up and knocked him prone. This wasn't great a Numba 3 was still there and ready for a fresh attack.
IMG_20250402_134207_HDR.jpg
As David couldn't attack while laying down on the job, and Numba 3 was fresh and ready, he had 5 dice to roll, with no defence to deal with. And just like the goblin that he is, he just decided to kick the poor gnome, taking another point of endurance off him, putting him down to 3 left. The other goblins could do nothing but wait there turn.

David stood back up, and used 3 points of Stamina to swing at Numba 3 behind the door, and landed a strike, knocking 2 more points off him, leaving him with only 3 reminding endurance.

However, it was now the goblin's turn.. with 2 fresh boys ready to attack, they did just that. First Numba 1 on his left, gave him a wack and was able to land a strike, taking 2 of the 3 reminding points off him. Numba 3 then decided to follow this up... and rolled a 6.. 3 points of damage.. David couldn't defend against that (well, Numba 3 rolled two 4s, two 2s and a six, to David's 4, 3, 1) and so the poor gnome was overwhelmed and taken out.

I then gave it another go with the only real difference being that one of the one of the gobbo's roared at him, which I'm guessing sounds like a "Mew". but in the end, played quite the same with some bad dice rolls by David.

So.. even with the updated Map, he didn't spare too much better... I'm gonna have to double check the Gobbo's movement though.. As in when they come to a wall after going through a door, do they ALWAYS roll to see which way they turn. While the two which started in the 5x3 room would just turn to face the enemy which they could see due to the torch light, the ones the move out of the big room, come to a corridor with no light and they can't see the far door. while there is a wall to the left and front, being a goblin, would they roll to see if they turn to the left (and have to stop cause there is a wall there) or be smart enough to just follow the corridor down... this might matter in that it would help keep only 1 point of attack against the gnomes, more then two. Either way, I think I might give it another go but he might think about holding back so he only has goblins in front of him cause running in a small space with goblins front and back isn't really a good move.

TUMS (heh, what a silly acronym!) has goblins always placed facing the entrance door when they're revealed, but I've had a look and I can't see facing given anywhere in the MSAN version, so it's up to you what direction you face the goblins when they're initially placed. I could give some hints as to how I beat the goblins in this scenario... but where's the fun in that? ;)

shame I can't just lock the doors (other then the reinforced one) ^_^ I'll always admit with my Chess game, I have a problem thinking more then a few moves ahead, and I only think in some directions, often missing something important... while my game isn't great.. not awful but not great.

technically, thinking about it.. In the room closest to the Gnome with two goblins.. only one of them CAN see the door.. there are no light sources in the room, the goblins perception is 2... The first one can clearly see the door but the second can't.. but of course, that's only for the first movement.. if facing the door, he would move forward and then can see it.. Same pretty much true for the larger room too.. though in that case, it can see the wooden door more then the archway but.... mm.. Got a couple of ideas I wanna try out next game..

thank god that, unlike HeroQuest, they aren't smart enough to Attack then move out of the way for there mate to attack ^_^ oh wait... I'm often the DM when I play (haven't played the board game as a player in years.. though the computer game versions are pretty good)
