The thorny issue of 'threadomancy'

Perhaps I'm just in a bad mood today, but I seem to have been spending an inordinate amount of time over the past week or two opening threads which have unread posts, only do discover that it's an ancient thread, and the only new content is someone saying 'Yes, I agree' or 'These models look nice'.

It's great that members old and new can explore and enjoy all of our old threads, but is there really any need to revive a thread if you have nothing significant to contribute to it? If you have some new insight or a question then by all means post away. Otherwise it might be better to enjoy the thread, but let it rest in peace.

Anyone else feel the same? Or am I just being a grumpy old bastard? (probably the latter I suspect).

How old a thread are we talking? Months or years? A thread that contains good material and has been around for a long time may not have been seen by new members yet. I'm sure some will enjoy it being dug up.

Also, some areas of the forum have a lot less activity (the Wargame Shows forum for example) and it's easy to assume that if a thread is on the first page then it must be recent!

Once could also argue that merely saying " 'Yes, I agree' or 'These models look nice' " isn't a new insight or question regardless of the age of the thread.

It's a thorny issue for sure, but I think unless it gets out of hand we should just let sleeping dogs (or threads) lie.

I don't feel like a grumpy old bastard myslef but I agree with you though I probably find this far less irritating than you do.
For Showroom threads I find it less annoying (it only reminds of old pics and we get to see painted lead) than for controversial threads (what is Oldhammer? Is gaming with old rules and plastic models better than with proper old lead and new rules?, those kind of topics) where th ewhole history has to be taken into account and where writing "I don't think so" or "you sure?" will only open Pandoras's sh*tbox again.
That said threadomancy only happens once in a while with new active members waves (we seem to be in one right now) so it shouldn't be a big matter I guess.

I can understand your frustration but as I see it, people expressing their praise even on very old stuff is part of parcel of a miniatures related forum. I don't agree with the idea that someone saying something with as little information as "That's cool!" has no value. It helps to generate motivation which is of great value to the original poster.

There is one and only one solution to this : People wanting to do some Threadomancy must cast "resurect" successfully before doing so...

Threadomancer.. kind of like a necromancer right? so whfb3 it should be as below.
A lvl 5 threadomancer is not much to worry about usually no armour and minimal spells.
The lvl 25 threadomancers is where you should worry although you dont usually see any over lvl 20

and dont forget the usual.. Does anyone know what base size they use?

Anyway joking aside I dont mind if its constructive comments but I agree the 'Thats Nice' comments are a bit annoying sometimes. Especially if there is some good pics there and I am thinking its an update..

Really doesn't bother me, no reason not to post on whatever thread you like, it's a forum, not a news service,

OTOH, pointless posts are pointless no matter how old the thread is, but appreciating someone elses post is always nice and never seems pointless.

Grumpiness should generally be championed as displaying depth of character, no worries there!

Not even slightly troubled by this.
Not even a little.

Especially since there's a period of growth in the forum.
I'm happy for folks to find threads which are, to them, buried treasures.

It's not exactly a miniature forum related problem, you see it everywhere (and I've never seen it successfully stopped). Oddly, I know I've seen miniature forum attitudes that are polar opposites, with some completely against threadomancy, while others almost demand opening up old threads instead.

Good point with a forum not being a news service. It's not like most of what's discussed here is about the latest thing anyway, in danger of being terribly outdated by the time a new member stumbles upon it months later. I thought that was the point of this forum in the first place :)

Apologies if that was me. I try not to post on stuff thats more than 2 months old. On the other hand, it's a pity that some of those wonderful figures will disappear again in the dredge of the internet :)

I have no problem with it so long as whoever re-opens the thread for discussion posts this image before they say anything:

Say that three times fast after three beers & again after three more!

Given the small size of the forums & the lack of incentives, like access to special forum areas or titles for pure post count, I don't really see an issue here. I actually like seeing older stuff brought back up because my old brain forgets about inspiring work that I previously viewed. Damn old brain... :)

I've never seen a problem with old thread resurfacing....they are fascists about it over on Bugman's and it seems to breed unnecessary stress....that I just don't understand the need for.
