The Squig Appreciation Thread

Hi all,

I'm now the proud owner of the Gloomspite Gitz Vanguard box and it's come with a load of night goblins, a few trolls and some squigs.

As you know, I'm currently trying to prep for the old world with my Goblin Green 25mm bases for my Skaven army and I plan to do the same for these gobbos.

However, I have done a bit of a search around the net and I can't find much info on squigs, I don't mean the lore as there's plenty of that, but the design history.

Does anyone know when they first appeared? Was it 5ed? Who made the models? Why are they in Fantasy and 40k, and did they appear in one first?

Also, what are the best squigs you've seen? Have you seen any mods/kit bashes?

This is a pic from the box art:

I might make the eyes a bit bigger on mine just to make them more cartoonist.

Show us your squigs!

Squigs were well before 5th.
In the Rouge Trader era, Squigs (short for Squiggly Beasts) are a .. well, technically tyraid race which work very symbiotically with Orkoids and the various species are used for various reasons. Kev Adams did a number of them though they are mostly the same kinda squig.

In WFB 4ed, Squigs, mostly Cave Squigs are very much a part with again, many a good Kev Adams sculpt, but were not in the 3ed Rule or Armies book. So all in all, It was late 1990 mostly to tie in with the new Waaargh the Orks rule book for 40K Rogue Trader (1ed).

I mostly have.. little interest in the modern squig sculpts.. part of the removal of all humour and fun design GW does.

It’s not my area of expertise, but the earliest Squigs I’ve come across are Kev Adams sculpts for early 40K.

See the 1991 Blue Catalogue.

Managed to find a pic from here:

I'll try and find some more pics of old squigs, I agree with you that GW seems to have lost the sense of humour with older models, I think it's part of trying to be facing friendly and the move towards a more serious grimdark.

For me, it will always be satire, like Tolkein on steroids.

The original ones are a range of squig species which.. lets see..
A Growler I think, which are hairy dog-sized squigs used as pets, Spider like one is probebly a Parasite-Hunting Squig, Flesheater squigs. 40K had a wild range of Squigs used for various things (like Orks have no hair. All the hair you see attached to the head or anything, is a Hair Squig.

In WFB, they are mostly Cave Squigs. Which are well, more based on the more classic space hopper from the 70s (technically 1969) then.. whatever that print is meant to be ^_^; Which of course, they used as for units of Squig hoppers.

Also, I think saying about well done and painted ones.. It would be remiss to not mention the recently shown ones by Fimm

Just on the Old World release, there was something the other week around potentially not everything going to 25mm. So goblins, skaven, halflings... who knows.

More precise wording from the warhammer twitter: "All base sizes will be included on a unit's profile, if you want to get the correct sizes we'd recommend waiting until they're all published as it is not necessarily the same for all cavalry/infantry etc."

These are the squigs from the vanguard box, I don't like the way they were shown as bouncing as I'm trying to go for the retro look so I cut the legs down. I'll need to use some green stuff to fix the cuts as there's a few chunks missing, but this is vaguely what they would look like with normal legs.

I may try to make them a bit rounder too as these newer models don't seem to have the blobbyness of the early ones.

yeah.. them new ones doe seam.. a bit more jumpy with long legs.

Just thought i would look, so I looked on Kev's site (Goblinmaster.online) for his current 'squig' types.. they are 'Bounders'.. not quite the same a originals of course, the legs are a bit too long for my taste but... That kinda shocked me into something that I don't know if it was always there but I'm surprised I didn't pick up on.

In 1985 a toy was released by Worlds of Wonder, created by Ken Forsse. IT was called 'Teddy Ruxpin'. To go with it a storyline was created (as it was a toy which could talk along to a audio Compact cassette which gave stories (They have remake it in some.. awful versions but oh well).. With the tapes and books, they worked on a TV show.. the original one was live action but only a 'pilot' movie was made. It was then made into a animated show which ran from 1986 for about 64 episodes and unlike alot of series at the time, was very story base (though a few standard problems with enemies being defeated soo much as to make then no threat in the end)...

What does this have to do with anything? the one.. well. villian but not a serious one, he was always very minor, was a character called Jack W. Tweeg. Under his 'command' was his assistant L.B., who was kinda the leader of his race. a Race of small, red creatures with a horn on there head called 'Bounders'. who moved around by bouncing and had visible teeth when there mouths were closed..

While these might have also been based on space hoppers.. they look SOO much like Squigs.. and with Kev even calling his version 'Bounders'.. There is no way they didn't know about Teddy Ruxpin, even if they didn't really know much.. I'm kinda starting to believe that Squigs ARE bounders!

I actually remember that show. That's a brilliant discovery and just have influenced them

I was born in 84 so would have been pretty young at the time, but I definitely remember it.

Like those other obscure shows - Knightmare, Trap Door and Dreamstone.

Obscure?!? you are talking about some of my collection of great shows. I repaired my childhood Teddy Ruxpin a few years back (got the complete animated series on DVD), I was working on converting a spare (I got a couple so I had parts to repair my old one) to run with a mp3 player cause I only have a couple of cassettes but.. well, the electronics is .. I haven't been in a enough interest to do work on that after a few problems like the autostop feature etc.

Got some nice unofficial Trap Door figures I'm slowly painting up.. Got the official Dreamstone ones. Haven't worked on my Knightmare one for a while cause sculpting the helmet of justice is a bugger.. (oh, and the old Knightmare board game... yeah.. I got it but it's not great and no miniatures ¬_¬)

I guess it's obscure to millennials, I don't know many other people my age so unfortunately these old shows are lost on them.

They're certainly better, imho, than a lot of stuff that came after.
