The making of Feyde Black: Bounty Hunter (ex-Imperial Assassin)

I decided to build a new model for BYOL as it is my first one, by converting one of my most and least favourite models.

It's an early space pirate that is really a remodelled fighter from WFB.

The movement of the model is great, it seems to be swinging around firing.

But it has a terrible sculpt for the gun, and its armour looks 'fantasy' not 'sci-fi'.

I decided to make the figure an ex-Imperial Assassin bounty hunter. To get what I needed, I cut the backpack and combi-weapon off an assassin model, took the sword from another backpack from my bits box, and the gun-sling from a storm bolter.

I removed the model's own gun, replaced it with the combi-weapon, including the pistol grip magazine under the hands, and attached the weapon sling swinging out to the side to add to the sense of movement.

After cutting off the backpack, I had to file it flat, remove the remains of the existing sword, and then glue it to the model's back.

I split the sword in two, and mounted it above and below the backpack.

I used the universal 'mysterious bounty hunter' colour scheme of blue and grey for the basecoat.Feyde Basecoat.jpg
Then I realised those weren't sandals but strappy shoes, so as I added the detail I had to work the blue back around the toes etc.

I decided to decal with red...

And then added highlights...

And finally added the flash of a laser pointer, and some detail on the helmet. I might still add a Boba Fett/Assassin radar-sight on the side of the helmet and some Maori 'moku', but for now this is it...

Feels like a great model to use as an assassin in my Rogue Trader House Army or as an adventurer/bounty hunter.

Great conversion!!

Looks a fiddly paint job. What does the texture on the hood represent?
Thank you! The texture represents three things:

1) I hadn't painted for two years and I thought all of my black was rubberised, so I used a dark grey base;
2) Citadel now sell textured dark grey paints;
3) I am nearly 50 and my eyes did not spot the texture until I did the close up photos! I think it is on the gun too.

As a result I started redoing the head after I worked out what had happened. In other news I found some black paint (which I used on the sword) so I that may be the new base on the head.

I removed the 'textured' paint with my thumbnail, I thought I'd take the opportunity to fix a sculpt issue - the wonky slot on the left side of the visor...

I'm going to tackle that with a pointy knife and a great deal of care...

Looking better! Sorry didn’t mean to nitpick, but you super magnified photos certainly showed it up! ;)

Not sure what 40k game is going down on Sunday. Anyone have details about the doctor webb super 40k 2nd ed beatdown bonanza?

Not at all - I couldn't work out why that paint had gone lumpy, and then I discovered it had sand in it!

It had to come off at that point, where was no painting over it. It's looking a lot better now...IMG_0758.jpg IMG_0759.jpg

yeah.. pay attention to the paint range name.. 'Texture' is textured ^_^ technical is.. some stupid name I haven't 100% worked out but mostly seamed to be some way 'special' stuff like primer, liquid green stuff, medium etc. Base is paint stuff, Shade is wash, Contrast is thick wash.

I finally decided add a cameleoline cloak to this guy (how can a blue, red and white bounty hunter hide otherwise?) to accentuate that movement a bit more...

I saw a guy use an airbrush to create a clever effect where the camo mask was on in contact with the ground, but off higher up, so I used drybrush to try an emulate it.

Overall I'm pretty pleased, I haven't painted anything beyond battlefield level for years so it's come out quite well, and I think does justice to the base figure's better attributes..

The cloak is a nice touch. I like the way the drybrushing turned out. (I prefer to avoid airbrushes for primarily aesthetic/style reasons. I feel they look too "new" for my taste.)
