The Battle For Amasec (40K 2nd Edition)

Jonas

Vassal
Dr. The Viking (of Dr. The Viking's Miniature Games Hell) and myself decided to start out the year with some 40K 2nd Edition. We played ~ 2000 points and it took us almost 8 hours....

The situation started with an alarm call from the colony Baxta 1 on Yx dated 847.M41/132l. Colonist claimed that Orks had overrun their settlement and taken hold in the settlements amasec producing facilities.
Amasec is of vital importance in this sector as it is the main channeling substance for Imperial righteousness and belief.

Inquisitor Gar and a retinue of Space Marines was sent to the planet to investigate.

The initial report of the Inquisitor is represeneted below.

+++Incomplete Report from Inquisitor Gar, planet Yx, the Coldburn Sector+++

Date 847.M41/244

Snippet is missing due to intersystem E-field disturbances.

"...The colonists have therefore decided to flee the settlement. Production of amasec has completely ceased. The production must be restored before riots ensue. The Orks present in the settlement seem to hail to the Warlord called Batshit. An assault has been prepared for 847.M41/300 which is the annual Ork shooting festivity. They Orks should be drunk by then."

+++Report ends+++

We had a couple of special rules added, like the Orks should roll each turn to see which units or vehicle crews were drunk and we had to drink some beer too.... My pictures turned out pretty blurred, maybe Dr. The Viking took some better... But here goes:

I quickly painted the Medic for this battle, but he is not all done yet.

And this was apparently my last picture...

This picture came next in my camera....

The battle raged a bit back and forth, the Orks started out pretty good (even though most vehicle crews were drunk from turn one. An out of control Wartrak managed to shoot a direct hit on the Librarian and gave him 12 wounds or something like that. Luckily the Medic near by managed to revive him to one wound and after that the Medic and the Librarian camped out in cover sending out loads of Psychic Smite to the Ork hordes.

On the left flank the Inquisitor was standing half the game looking the wrong way, but when he decided to join the battle he singlehandedly wiped out the Ork Commandos. Not that it had much influence to the general game, but I guess it was outweighed by Warboss Batshits decision to sit back and forget to do anything for the first two turns too.

A Marine Squad had decided to take cover in the building opposite to the Amasec Brewery, but when they had positioned themselves in the building it took a hit from a Leman Russ battle-canon and everyone was falling around inside and did not do much good in this game.

I think in the end the battle was probably won by the Marines. The Amsec Brewery had been secured and most of the Ork vehicles had been destroyed, but had the game continued a few turns more it is hard to tell what could have happened.

The game was long, chaotic and great fun, so if this is setting the standard for my 2014 gaming year I will look forward to what other old school adventures we will experience.

DEATHWORLD ADVENTURES

Haha, it loks really fun! I have tried to comment on your blog, but it looks like I have done something wrong. I'll go comment again!

Thanks guys. I plan to finish an assault squad for the marines this year and hopefully a techmarine and a dreadnought too 8-)

The Ork horde is constantly groing and I need something to counter ;)

It's a silly thing but just seeing Wargear , strategic and warp cards on the table alongside spike plants made me smile!

Very nice table for what appears to have been an enjoyable game.

There really is lot of things to keep track of. Had the game been any larger it would probably have taken forever

Each time we play 2nd edition I understand why they changed the game. Not because 2nd edition didn't work, as it ceartainly is an enjoyable game, but the gameing community wanted to have tournaments and compete and it would be really hard to do in this edition.

I think 3rd and 4th edition did a lot to streamline the game for tournament play, but what it gained in speed it lost in character and the joy of random fun and mayhem.

40K probably went in the right direction for a competitive and selling point of view, but somewhere it also lost what attracted me in the first place and the miniatures turned to s**t.

One thing I never come to understand though is, every time a new edition is out, gamers world wide moan and complain how the new version is bad and the previous was oh so good. When people tell them; "Well, you could just play the old version you like", there is no understanding at all. Like if a new version of the game automatically renders all previous versions useless.

Anyway, thanks for all your comments, I hope to bring lot more games to this forum in the future.

I agree 2nd ed definitely was a very fun version for small games. There's a tremendous potential with the generic army lists and game system to make good story-driven battles. I enjoyed the more "quick and easy" aspect of later versions of the game when I just wanted to throw huge armies one against another with lads, throwing buckets of dice, but the games I remember the most had a good (and often silly) scenario and were played with unbalanced forces with 2nd ed rules...

Hehe, you are right. Most people look dazzled at me when I say I just play RT or 2nd Ed and have no interest in the current game. It is like it had become obsolete and it could not be played any more.
The fact is that, though there are some people playing RT/2nd, I don't know anyone still playing 3rd, 4th or 5th. That might mean something, I guess...

+1

I think it's 4th which had this commando thing at the end which really was nice for narrative games, apart from that it's just the smae game to me. I always get new versions in hope to see more fun and to be able to play with anyone but know everything tends to be in special rules in spite of being in the chore gaming system and stats. I really prefer my multo melta with loads of dice to throw to penetrate armour than to know it's AP1 and melta-omething which gives 2 special rules I have to remember.
That said some parts or RT also were a bit boring sometimes with really realistic things like speed reduction , angles of turn depending on speed and hit locations... last games I played (3 years ago :? ) tended to blend all what we loved in all editions and it worked just fine since the only goal wwas to have fun.

Sorry Jonas, we're on the verge of derailing this thread but you just opened Pandora's box here ;).

I don't mind  It is always nice to hear what other people love about the game.

I do think some of the things in the RT/2nd Ed. is kind of strange sometimes, but if you accept it as part of the game and play according to them it works out ok.

I stopped wanting realistic gaming (it is sci-fi!) and just want to have fun games.

I have come by other rules systems with special rules which was absolutely strange to me, but after some thought it worked out fine when the rules are learned and games are played according. Some things are just part of a rule set and don't really have to make sense.

I play RT; I play 2nd Ed and I play 6th Ed.... I only really enjoy the first two!!

You see due to their size and make up 25-30mm models are only really ideal for smaller; narrative driven skirmishes. Apocalypse sounds like a good idea but honestly how many of us have access to 10 foot by 12 foot gaming tables and £20,000 (€30,000) of models....

There was a game that was great for large scale battles; and was also fantastically adaptable for easy tournament play; that game was second edition Epic in the perfect scale of 6mm....sadly that game is dead! Not with me however as I have just painted another two epic dark angels companies and a detachment of scouts!! Xxxxxx
