The Barbarian - Not Strictly Oldhammer...

So here's a picture of the Frostgrave Barbarian I painted last weekend. I know it's not strictly Oldhammer but this is the first 28mm mini I've painted in over ten years.

I'll be posting something more Oldhammer related as soon as I've gotten my first unit of Orcs finished, though I really couldn't tell you when that might be.

I saw this I believe on Google+ yesterday and thought it was excellent! I was actually inspired by the green pants for some minis that had been sitting on my painting table. The red scabbard really give him some flare as well. Top notch stuff!!!

Ticks all the boxes as far as I'm concerned, would appear to fit in well with the grenadier barbarians in my book.

Well done

Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you like it, and the comments have made me more eager to get the thief finished as well - can't have Fafhrd without the Mouse beside him...

Same sculptor so they should!

On first glance I thought - "What's not Oldhammer about a classic Grenadier scultp?" Then I spotted the Frotstgrave title and, well, who cares: he's a great sculpt and well treated by you brush skills :)

Makes me want to buy and build the Norse/Barbarian army, that I've been musing over for ages, even more. Sigh, I don't need to spend money right now!

I have to admit, the idea of a Norse army has some appeal for me as well - in all my years playing WFB I have never fielded a human army of any description, and with Wargames Foundry releasing some of the old Citadel sculpts and Perry Vikings the temptation is definitely there.

Same deal here too. Elves, chaos and dead humans sure, but never had a pure, human army. Those re-released Foundry sculpts are just a little too expensive for me right now so I've been desperately holding out, but its only a matter of time.

I started collecting old citadel viking and barbarian sorts a few years ago. I started to struggle on troop variation. You've got plenty of characters from citadel, but I struggled for a command group, and units that stand out. I was thinking mammoths, war hounds, bears etc. I found it difficult to find minis that fitted an old hammer theme. In the end, I decided to do a "Humans of the old world" sort of army. The main contingent being Oldhammmer empire Knights, retainers, paladins, Lords of battle etc, but with a regiment of Barbarians tagging along. They look good together, and the fluff ideas are endless. I disliked the way GW came away from the "good" fantasy norse barbarian theme, and changed the fluff to make out the Norse Tribes were all disciples of chaos, and released naff plastic marauders! Sacrilege! Surely there's some good wild folk out there!? Kislev doesn't count, and the wild looking bearded Ulric boys are wayyyyy too pricey....
