The Ballet of the Brushes

having had an interesting discussion over John Peel's copy of Bolt Thrower it seemed like a thread of musical suggestions adjacent to Oldhammer would be of interest. So that might be stuff you might paint to, maybe things you might game to. Music that inspires your Oldhammer flame, etc. Perhaps you have something on whilst coming up with campaigns or maybe a piece just brings retro wargaming to mind when you play it. So very much an open thread.

Our own composer sums it up nicely:
I was thinking it might not be bad to have a thread here with Oldhammer adjacent stuff in whatever style one found appropriate. It could be music referencing games or stories relevant to the genre, like Zep's Misty Mountain Hop or Bolt-Thower in general. It could be things one finds thematically appropriate, as background music to game by, or inspiration for games, like the soundtrack to Dune or Yoko Kano's Tank! out of Cowboy Bebop. Whatever style, so long as there's some meaning to you

I expect a thread full of both nostalgic retro gaming touches, ambient soundscapes and orchestral marvels...

So as to kick off the thread I'm going to throw in the audio backgrounds Louise Sugden did for her YouTube channel since I quite often listen to them whilst painting for a bit of non-invasive background. Very much a retro (video) game feel.

My favourite anime series’ soundtrack is Gundam Thunderbolt (gotta love epic mecha battles soundtracked with free jazz!) https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8DS_G5PRB2Vd8LtP-hzT-B2WNgLe6-JZ&si=crehtlfdQ4aEZIED

Talking of YouTube creator’s music, I find Bill Making Stuff’s tunes delightful

Not to mention all the electronic music I dig, but they are little too pounding for contemplative mini painting.

tricky as alot of the stuff I listen to isn't up for free on places. And it's all over the place. Can you really mention Pink Lady and Domine in the same sentence? mm.. I just did

Putting my own contributions up here is maybe a stretch, but I did a decidedly lo-fi number inspired by a game a read about on Cheetor's blog a bunch of years back.

I really ought to re-record that one of these das, if I can find a piper. Blues pipes could be a thing, right?

Another number I wrote that's definitely game-adjacent is a little fairy tale ballet called The Faerie Flute. It involves a character named the "Troll King" (whom I always picture as an orc for reasons) kidnapping the foster son of the Faerie Queen. A human girl sets out about rescuing him. It's kind of Orpheus with the genders swapped and a happier ending. (Based very loosely on the Scottish ballad Sir Orfeo.) Anyway, the third tableau is very orcy. Supposed to involve lots of kids dressed as goblins swirling around in crazy caricature of the 18th century formal fancy dancing the faeries do. Also a nice big fight scene. The healing dance is long, and slow, but builds to what is hopefully a good climax. (I need to make a better recording of this too. It's been played a couple of times now, but there've been issues both times. Underrehearsed.) Anyway . . .

Also as threatened, here's two anime numbers in orchestral arrangement: "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" from Neon Gensis Evangalion and "Tank!" from Cowboy Bebop.

Too many artists to mention, but I usually tailor my music to what I'm painting, my usual go-tos are...
Eldar/Elves - Anything by Medwin Goodall (pan pipe hippy stuff)
Undead - Cradle of Filth, Emperor, Burzum, most funeral doom.
Chaos - Bolt Thrower, Thorns, Aborym, The Berserker, Carcass
Blood Angels - Abba (seriously lol)
Space Wolves - Wardruna, Man o War
Guard - Ambient artillery asmr.
Bretonnians - Bardcore, Clannad, Enya.
Necromunda - Adam and the Ants, Molchat Doma, Ic3peak, Russian doomer playlists.

Dark ambient drone and Iron Maiden (pre Blaze), The Flight of Dragons, The Last Unicorn, The Wicker Man and Transformers the Movie also have some bangers. Oh and Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.

Yet to find suitable mood music for Orcs, might try old dungeon synth era Mortiis or prison era Burzum.

I would drop links, but there's so many good tunes out there Id be here all year choosing the best ones.

I'd forgotten, but I used to listen to a lot of the audiobooks whilst painting. Not done that in a while and I know I've a handful I've not listened to, thanks for jogging this old brain!

Audiobooks and lectures I like to listen to when I paint, I find music isn't engaging enough (though I love a good album fof other things). Always very excited when a new Peter Hutton lecture drops. At thd moment I am listening through the David Eddings book series, just got to King of the Murgos, which is available on YouTube. The narrator is a bit annoying but you kinda get used to it after a while and some of his character voices are quite fun. Solid 7/10 for narration.
