Space Riders minis (Suber version)

I believe I should unify my threads with RT related creatures IOT create a RT bestiary, they are way too scattered, Psychneuin, Pisceans, Minotaurs, etc (in fact I remember having Astral Hounds and Carnivore Clams which I am totally unable to find in the forum  ). Is there any way of adding them all to a single thread?

Anyway, I've begun to paint the Space Riders KS minis (Weee!). The first one is the Ambull. Delightful sculpt, seriously.

As it is a rock desert beast, I went for the brown approach. Dark brown as a base, shades with blue & green:

Then beiges for the fleshy parts. I thought of using more vibrating colours to add some touch, but this somehow felt more natural to me.

A rather bulky beast indded!

You can find it all here:

So, this is the first of the batch. More to come!

Second beast of the batch, the Zoat:

Once again, lovely sculpt, pure RT. I've always seen these guys painted in bright green or red, I thought I could use another approach and tried this palette:

More animal like, less alien (well, apart from being a xenocentaur, you know what I mean). Along with his pal...

Now let's see what comes next...

Back again, today with the Pisceans from the Space Riders set.

I just kept on the path I had already begun with the Finding Nemo nonsense

(Hard to see, but he has the proper face scars)

(I swapped weapons so it looked slightly different from the rest)

So, when I put them together with my other Pisceans, this is how they look:

(Yup, in case you didn't notice, this is my shameless inspiration  ):

You can find them hee:

Now for more beasts!

A whole squad of Pisceans? Nicely done! In general quite well done. Glad to see you're take on them. I need to get off my butt and get a second one (and third, fourth, fifth, etc.) finished.

Nice too see them coming Suber ;) Now for the others! 8-)
The Piscean squad remind me that I need to sculpt a third model ....at some point.....

I always have some room for more Pisceans

For the moment let's change the subject. Minotaurs! I already had two, but what if I got another three? That would be quite an imposing squad! So I had no choice, you know...

I gave them a thought or two about colour. I feared that they all would look too similar, I didn't want them to look like clones of the same mini. But I felt I had some restrictions; I opted to paint them in brown and black, instead of stained patterns and the like. I wanted Mediterranean bulls (as it's the inspiration for the Minotaur, after all)...

But then, the armour. If the skin colour was so similar in all of them, I needed to do something about clothes and weapons. The previous ones were both clad in red armour. If I followed the scheme, they would indeed be clones. I then tried a slight change. The risk here was going too far, I couldn't paint each one in a different colour, I think that Minotaur Power Rangers isn't quite that a brilliant idea . I'll let you judge.

This one is just the same model than the others I previously owned. Y made a weapon swap and repositioned the head:

This is the cyber-mino!

Finally the big bull boss:

The whole squad then looks like this:

You can see them here:

What can I do to provide plausible enemies? Contrary to everyone's suppositions, I'm not making Space Bullfighters. Sorry, that's not gonna happen.. But maybe some kind of Theseus Squad... But oh, then I'll need to build my own Labyrinth for the game... Hmmmm... ;)

The next mini from this set is different. If nothing else, at least just for the fact that I completely changed it from it's original purpose. I was painting it and when in the final stages a sudden thought came to mind...

I'm not into any Dredd stuff, so I really didn't need a Mean Machine. But the augmetics, the pale, sick skin colour... In fact what I had was a 40K Servitor and I hadn't realized! :o

Sooo, let's bring some greenstuff into the equation...

And some paint later:

That's it, now I have another Servitor for my dock workers crew :)

Let me begin with the Orky part of this KS. The Orks here are not just mere Orks, they are Chaos devoted Orks. Chaorks!

I chose this one to be the first of the batch, a Khornite Ork (as brutal as it can get!).

6nxbpd.jpg

The mini is sweet. If you wouldn't know where it comes from, it could certainly pass as belonging to the original ranges of the era. Lovely.

I chose a simple, effective scheme. I think I could have used more black maybe, but on the whole I think it works just as it is. I made up the Gorkne (or probably Morkne) symbol on the shoulder pad:

You can also find it here, as usual:

This is it for now, more coming soon!

Two more Orksies, this time Worshippers of Morkgle (or maybe Gorkle ::)).

Once again sweet retro sculpts, really fun to paint.

I've avoided classic flash greens for the skin, I think I'm trying more tones and colours and see what comes of it.

This unit is going crazier and crazier ;D

Two more incoming!

First, the Genztealer Hybrid:

zn55xg.jpg

Not really sure about how this one fits in the crew, but hey, these being a group of outcast Freeboterz who have seen some galaxy by now and who even worship some strange foreigner Gods (though for sure they don't fully understand who they are...), well, for sure a Genestealer Infection is not the worse they have faced...

The other one was a little bit tricky for me.

10y3yaf.jpg

At first I didn't know how to paint this one. As I was on the Chaos theme, I thought I could keep on. But the sculpt is quite neutral on that aspect, didn't suggest a Chaos worshipping at all, like the others did. I firstly thought of Slaanesh for this one, leaving the others I still have to paint for Tzeentch. Big, thick guy, leather pants, leather straps... I thought it could work. My approach was about a really pale skin and lots of tattoos all over, covering every square inch of exposed skin. But I suddenly felt it wasn't going to work. I finally left it all and went for this other idea. On the whole I think it works anyway.

So this is the group so far:

Only three left! :)

The end of the batch (and of the whole KS!) is made of these three guys.

2pr8arq.jpg

As you can see, I made a full chromatic change for the skin, I've avoided green and I've tried quite different colours. It's fun, I think I may follow this path for future Orks :)

The full group looks like this:

20qdl3k.jpg

I still have to develop a proper fluff for them, but from their aspect you can say they are an unorthodox Freeboterz band who have seen some ugly stuff through the galaxy
