Space Fleet Gothic - Discussion?

Following my introduction to this game last year by Steve / Thantsants - I've invested quite a lot of time and expense into this 'fun' board game, to the extent that I now own two "reasonable sized" fleets - one Eldar and one Tyranid. Why has a board game turned the head of dyed in the wool fantasy wargamer, of thirty plus years - simple, that little word in bold above. I'm therefore opening up some of the discussion on Space Fleet, via the messaging system, to the general forum to extend the debate and let others see what a smashing game this is.

Hopefully, most of you have seen Asslessman's blog posts 8-) on this subject and therefore gather an understanding of the game, the forces available and how the system works, or not. I won't repeat his efforts, but simply direct you to his blog posts:-

He has posted other articles, but, I'll leave you to find them yourselves. Others have also posted stuff expressing their opinion on the game on other pages :-

Hopefully these will encourage you dear reader to contemplate looking a bit deeper at the game and join-in the discussion and hopefully a game whenever the opportunity allows!

First likely topics - is the Tyranid fleet too powerful? Given that it can place an action card (Death Frenzy, usually played when a ship is on its last few wounds) on a single ship which can then rip apart an entire squadron, in a single turn! OK, the ship then dies, but, J.H. Christ - it has just take it two to three round of shooting to get the Tyranid player to play the card!
Another one is - when rolling for reinforcements and the Tyranid player rolls a six (choose type of ship) would it be fair to choose another Hive ship?

Eldar - are the Shadow class ships too fragile, given that any hits taken when traveling at high speed are more than likely critical?

All I can think of at the moment, but it's enough to get us started. 8-)

Oh, and if anybody wants to jump in feet first here's an early Christmas present, at a reasonable price.

Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with the game to have much of an opinion on whether Genestealers are too hard or not! Beyond the initial boxed set, which is mindbogglingly simple, the White Dwarf articles does seem like a mess of a game tho, and a good candidate for someone to write up an SRD.

But I've been looking at Space Fleet / Battlefleet Gothic but mostly just from a visual design point of view.

Notably, the spacecraft designs by Jez goodwin at the top there - did these make it through to production? What are they?

To be honest, I can count on two hands the number of times I've played the game, so, I'm no 'expert'. I'm hoping initializing this discussion is a step towards developing a player consensus as to interpretation of the rules, as it appears - most of the current players of the game are members of this forum!

The questions I posed are based purely my initial interpretations of the games I've played so far, I'm hoping others will come forward with their observations, which I hope we can then ruminate upon.

As for the aesthetics, I see you point - cracking stuff and the ship sketches as far as I'm aware purely concepts.

I shall be learning this game myself in the near future, although the miniatures are hard to find...

The concept is truly fun and it allows people to link BFG and WH40k games together in campaigns etc ... so there is much fun to be had there ... how many points are your two fleets?

If, you're patient you can pick them up at reasonable prices occasionally on Ebay, or simply buy the games and use the plastic ships average prices 10 to 25 GBP for the game, as for the size of my fleets I think I'm on about 2000 points (I've only got this many because I was trying catch Thantants & Asslessman and complete the set for Tyranids and then had to try a match it with the Eldar, for the sake of balance), but a standard game - I'd advise no more than 500.

Hope this helps
