Skeleton Champ

overcompensating skellington champ

After I started painting again I really try to get away from the 20 hour grinds. This one was again basecoated and highlighted with the airbrush while several areas received stippling and heavy washes instead of hour long glazing. Normally I´m very hesitant with adding chipping and stuff once I highlighted areas but here I wanted as much texture as possible without overdoing it.

That's a great paint job, love the colour combos - warmly shaded ice blue and coolly highlighted red/maroon - rather inspiring

Not too keen on the sculpt, but the paint job is absolutely beautiful. The cold blue is nicely otherworldly.

Wonderful paint job, adds a lot of charm to a mini I normally wouldn't look twice at if I saw it for 99p on ebay ;)
When you say basecoated and highlighted with an airbrush, what areas are you talking about? Just the armour/shield?
I've not really progressed beyond priming with my airbrush I must admit, and seeing some of the effects that people pull off with an airbrush and glazes has left me curious for info.

Some really nice fine detail you have put on that model.

Very effective use of colour and shade.

Nice but simple basinging to finish off.

You should be proud of that one.

Thanks for your comments.

I´m using the airbrush to lay down a gradient on the parts that cover the largest part of the mini in order to be done with the midtones. Its faster and more polished than doing it with the brush but due to the combination of air pressure, fluidity, distance and duration of the paint burst its less controlled. One overmotivated blast with the airbrush and your work is ruined.

On this one I started from a black undercoat and then went through two or three blues until I used some desaturated light blue for the final application. I apply each hue in a zenithal way trying to cover less area the lighter the colour gets. Then I switched back to the brushes and applied the shadows (dark blue and reddish browns) and highlights (light blue with white) added. A careful glaze might be needed in places if the result is too chalky.
While it would have been possible to mask the armor and apply the other colors in the same way it would have been too much hassle and I painted everything else "manually".

it´s an old metal shield with sculpted wood grain. No freehand stuff done there ;)
