The Original Imperial space Marines are well known with there left shoulder being bumped with the right shoulder being the Chapter symbol. Later on.. for.. I'm not sure why, the Chapter Symbol moved to the Left shoulder and the Right was now the Squad marking.
Now, Most of my space marines are from w40K 2nd but I do have a number of the plastic first editions and the later metal bodies with the now 'mark 6' armour. These later metals don't have the old arms so no bumps..
anyway, I'm sure most of this is already known.. the question is more, I've happily gotten a hold of a couple of the original space marine metals (might look for more as I want to go over my army some time to just neaten it up and stuff but probebly not any time soon) and I've come up against a bit of a problem..

You can probebly make out that his left shoulder pad is bare. no bumps.. either because of the lack of a right shoulder pad or.. I don't know. you might be able to see some marks on the pad and when I look at my figure, It does remind me of one which has either been filed down to remove the bumps or, more likely, the bumps were removed prior to whatever issue this was, like if it was a later re-issue and they wanted to remove the bumps to put it more in line.. but I doubt that..
Question is.. Was this figure ALWAYS released sans bumps? or was it originally released with the bumps.. from what I can see, never had them on the released version.. and a couple of other captains don't have them, but some do.. was it maybe something they tried with ranking officers?.. not sure.. I was wondering about this before I get to really painting the guy. If he was originally released with the bumps, when as I have already had to repair the chainsword, I would add the bumps back. If he was NEVER released with bumps, then I see no reason to add them.
any one have a clue? (on a second note.. reason for removing the bumps? over then to sell more figures.. cause if you put the squad mark on one shoulder pad, you couldn't just move figures around for whatever squad you build for that game)
