Sci-fi small animals for basing

ManicMan

Lord
sometimes it can be a good idea to add like a small animal on a larger miniatures base. Something like a bird, rat, worm etc. all quite easy to source, but I'm having a bit of trouble when it comes to more sci-fi related.

I guess something like a rat might still be possible but finding small fodder sci-fi animals is kinda a pain. Of course, the line between fantast and sci-fi is very blurry but since you can get a range of small animals for basing stuff, I would think there would be some Sci-fi ones too.. but the main stuff I find is just normal real world animals...

anyone got any ideas for either where to get, or what to do?

Granted, they're not easy to source but as a source of inspiration, they're free! A bit of putty and ellbow grease - you could well sculpt your own teensy-cutesy squigs.

yeah.. I don't really see squigs as the be all and end all of sci-fi critters (like with the snotlings, they are kinda just ones you can put the same figures in both fantasy and sci-fi) but possible and not TOO hard to make up.

thanks

The War-games Atlantic Harvesters box has some smaller "bug" creatures in it, possibly still too big just as basing accessories, but that's all I can think of that isn't solely in the lands of "mini robots" - of which there are some which might do for basing accessories, for example the various pets from Bombshell although many might be a little large.

I think if you want to telegraph "sci-fi" explicitly then you're probably stuck with either obvious alien creatures - but then you have the difficulty of "reading" that when as a small base accessory or "robot versions" of animals we recognise - so robo-cat, etc approach.

I got the Harvester set for some fodder parts a while back ^_^

yeah, the bombshell pets are too big but I really like some of them ^_^
