RT Tyranid Squigs

So I've been collecting my Rogue Trader era Tyranids/Genestealer Cult for a long time now and basically have everything except that insanely expensive Magus with Holographic city stand and some hybrid on foot sculpts. Whilst it's all sitting in boxes ready for a move interstate (to Melbourne, here in Australia) next week, I received in the post today the first of one of the best scores I've had whilst collecting these past 4 years - Tyranid Squigs. LOTS of Tyranid Squigs. Below are pics of what I got in this first package, 54 small squigs, 3 large spider squigs, 3 grabber slashers. At 4 squigs to a 40mm round base that's 15.5 Tyranid Squig (Ripper) Swarms. The crazy thing is that the other package inbound is bigger yet (though due to funds had to split with my brother who is building a rather epic squig-centric ork air-based army) and I'll do posts of them when they arrive also.

But in the meantime, because we so rarely see so many squigs in one place, enjoy the insanity (fresh from the post box so not my paint but still nice):

The prices are insane.

The ebay seller 'aa-wargames' has a batch of 10 squigs up right now decently priced as far as the bids go so have a look, I believe they are listed as 'rogue trader ork squigs'.

Otherwise the next package inbound is 28 bases of 6 (no grabber slashers/spider squigs) with from what I can tell 17 genestealer familiars mixed in also. 54 of the squigs (so 9 bases, no familiars) are going to my brother for his ork army as I couldn't afford all of them otherwise and yeah, I'm pretty sure I'll have a full 6 troops choices of 9 ripper swarms for the tyranids (at 4 to a base, working the familiars onto bases also - draws links between the cult and the nids much more they do as the swarms), but we'll have to wait and see if I have enough for the 54 bases, heh. Yeah, 54 bases (even at 4 to a base which I have seen done and it's about right on the 40mm round bases). Suffice to say I was lucky in the find and pounced so fast. Luckier that the chap then sent international as it was a US only post auction and well Australia.

Essentially though you are still looking at $4 USD per squig including postage costs if you are lucky,k otherwise there's all these insane prices of 10 USD+ per squig even for the smallest ones and the grabber slashers at $65 USD+ are a joke. Patience, it's all about patience, years of it, but yeah, I am still epically excited by it all. :)

I love these guys. So characterful and the flip side with what I find issue with when it comes to the modern tyranid and genestealer models. They are all so anonymous. What can't there be more tyranid grislies based on ork biology these days?

Tyranid (or ork as same models used) Squigs are some of the hardest to attain models when collecting rt era Tyranids becausethere is this unjust feeling to have them at stupid prices. When we're talking $10-$15 USD for a single squig the size of an epic 40,000 genestealer it's a bloody joke. Up until this huge find and score, I had less then 20 including 7 genestealer familiars I used for padding, and that's from 4 years of collecting. I was resigned to just not having a huge squig swarm prescence...now however...I have a significant amount.

The Original background for Tyranid Squigs aka Ripper Swarms amounts to this:

The Tyranids captured Orks, and genetically engineered them into the squigs/rippers of the Tyranids. Orks hearing of this, stormed Tyranid hive ships to rescue their compatriots. Discovering them transformed as squigs the Orks were enraged but enough of the latent orkiness remained in the squigs that they recognised the Orks and the Orks them, as kin. The Orks gathered as many squigs as they could as they retreated from the hive ships and over many generations cultivated and evolved the squigs towards the Ork squigs of today, whilst the tyranids evolved them to iron our all orky free will and make them distinctly Tyranid!

This is rather awesome and it's a shame that these early squig/ripper swarm origins have been removed from the codicices and overall fluff of recent editions (well even 2nd edition for a large part).

Anyways, the paint jobs aren't mine, but the models are and as time permits the army will get painted and I'll have an army of absolute win to put up here (and then I'll start on my large 2nd ed Tyranid collection haha!). The paint scheme will blend the tyranid reds with the genestealer cult purples and blues to act as a visual link between both forces as one and the same. So without further ado, all of my Tyranid Squigs:

The 27 genestealer familiars at the bottom of the above, in the below pic, the models below are the ones my brother is getting (there are 6 stilt squigs in the one below under the familiars just they are standing up):

I respect the hell out of your old school tyranid collecting dedication.

Thank you. :)

20 more hunter slayers arrived today, taking the total to 143. Am picking up 15 more in trade via these forums so that'll jump to 158 of the initial goal of 180 with an extended goal of 360 (because everyone wants double force organisation charts of troops termagants, yeah yeah they've changed selection in 7th ed but still, fun times!). There should be better pictures up once I've moved as will be with friends whose hands don't shake and have actual camera gear.

They won't be as candy coloured once I strip and re-paint them but the squig swarms will be the link between the redder tyranids and the bluer/purpler genestealer cult.

When I was a kid, I had 6 2nd ed plastic genestealers and 6 plastic 2nd ed termagants for like 5 years...we played by proxy with army men, and as a result played most armies we could get our hands on rules wise, heh. Learnt a lot ended up only buying (when we had our own money) what we truly needed. Of course, then you become and adult and somewhere down the line the insanity is unleashed and you find yourself on a quest for an epic rt era army of proportions no one seems to have thought of attempting before (at least on teh internetz!). Yeah.
