RT Space Wolves Army List WD 157

Hey guys I recently gathered both a full 10 man Grey Hunters and Blood Claws squad, on top of that I also have 5 Wolf Guard in Power Armor ( I wanted to do something different vs the termis and missed these guys when they were new ), 5 scouts and Ragnar plus a Rune Priest in Termi Armor.

I'm not looking to do anything crazy exploiting or cheesy here, rather working with what I own and the rarity ( expensive price too ) of some of these bits. Before I get to work building these units I would like some input if anyone has any since it will be difficult to salvage these once they are glue melted etc.

Using WD 157 here the army list with options, what would you guys say would be "reasonable" - "good" vs "nah don't waste points or do this" with these options:

1 I have enough chainswords to arm 10 guys, both grey hunters can buy them and blood claws come stock with them. I was considering giving my GH chainswords with their BP and Bolter for the points each model, is this worth it or not ? Is it worth giving the GH sgt a meltagun, plasma pistol, or just stock ? same with the BC sgt ?

2 I have enough of the special assault weapons ( ie hand flamers power gloves plasma pistols power axes power swords etc ) to arm at lest 8-10 guys with that. Both GH and BC can take them.

3 What about scout loadouts ? most of the time I will be fighting chaos marines and daemons of varying gods.

Beyond this I do own jump packs which the BC can take, should I do this ? 5x or 10x ( you can take them in 5 split squads once or twice ) or just forget it ? again this is not looking to cheese or break anything more of a modeling vs too late and saying damn now I got a headache to replace all these bits. Mostly I'm doing this army as a cool and themed style, but still want to pick some "decent" choices here in terms of future games and so on with them.

When I play RT I'm using the Battle Manual so this is "late RT" vs early days.

Thanks for any help

Sort of interesting. So there's an entire late RT fandom that is playing games using late RT rules? What are advantages of it over 2nd ed?

It's a bit complicated and a number of factors with oldschool options and mentality that exists over all these years for many of GW's games from the "Golden Era".

I will attempt to put it all in no exact order here:

1 Specifically with both RoC volumes, there is very fun and themed lists that we can really go to town with our imaginations that becoming increasingly difficult or in other cases impossible outside of RoC to make. Some will claim "but you can just model and claim counts as" yea no...that is nowhere near as fun as being able to model them legally and play those lists legally.

I will give you one example here. I am working on a few RoC warbands, warband army lists, and even legion army list. It is currently impossible legally to play some of these in any other edition outside of RT. WD 108 has the renegade ( basically fully warband army ) list. This allows you to take beastmen, human degenerates ( cultists ), a few other things and a "renegade" HQ. On top of that you are allowed 1 God Specific legion squad of marines.

Now in the case of "legion" lists, this gets a bit wonky between volumes, due how different they are AND the fact there is a few WD issues much later into 1991 which have expanded units like the World Eater Ravagers ( first inception of khorne berzerkers locked at 5 man squads the then new war machine thingy blood slaughterer I think ) or RP adding in EC Noise Marine units or a master who can be a champ for an army.

The closest we ever got to these wild wacky and fun days of building pure or truly themed lists would be 3.5 Codex Chaos Space Marines and some of the Lost and the Damned list from that black crusade booklet during it.

2 Some of us do really enjoy that totally oldschool wild west days of RT and that "warhammery" feel that it included just like 3rd FB. True many will claim but but this is the worst playable version of 40k, well that kinda depends on many factors. Personally I really like the complicated and crazy stuff of RT and 3rd FB, it's not nostalgia so much rather the vibes and fun it all brings of not being so serious but focusing on narratives and imagination with cool fun themed armies.

I've never been a meta kind of player ( and I got into GW in 87 ) and continue to be focused on the Golden Era of GW gaming ( even though I own heaps of their modern games and plastic toy digital sculpted statue looking hybrids ). While I was around during RT days, I did not really play my first games of it till around 1990, and as I was getting more into it eventually 2nd ed landed and for me that began the whole rigid and streamlining into 3rd ed and so on. I miss and enjoy RT and yes there is enough of us out there over all these years who enjoy it for what it is and keep that spirit alive whatever countries or regions we may hail from.

3 Continuing part of the above many of us collect fully legal armies from RT, and even build these based on those times and mindsets. It can be kinda expensive or cheap depending on what we need to gather or already have. In my own way of things I am all about army building with a story and theme, it's one of things that I have always done since then till now even if it's not the most amazing units I love the story driven aspects of armies and campaigns based around all this.

4 Lastly and this will be a 50/50 thing for a few individuals. While it's true the most early days of RT when it dropped was very small squad based skirmish ( and that's great for those who enjoy that I'm totally for that and mid and late RT ), by the middle point army lists were really becoming a reality and you can even see in GD 92 in many of those entries. Those final years of RT with the Battle Manual totally changed things, it might have been a band aid just before 2nd ed landed but it essentially turned RT into a kind of Beta 1.5 2nd edition while retaining many past things. I won't claim it's perfect ( far from it ) but it's a solution for those of us who love RT and wish to play it with a few more minis than 10-20 models and keeping it practical and playable.

Some might suggest why not just play 2nd edition, well there is a number of reasons for that but I still prefer RT and again both RoC volumes and what we can do is a major factor there, the feel of RT as a game ( love it or hate it ), the cool lists and open not fully fleshed out universe etc.

While not my vid here is one that fully demonstrates RT being played quite fluently and quickly using the BM rules, obviously these guys really know what they are doing but it's an example of us being out there and keeping these older editions alive.
