RT Bolters vs. Autoguns vs. Bolt Pistols

I'm reading the Freebooterz / 'Ere We Go books atm, trying to raise an RT Ork army of 2000 pts.

The bog-standard gun for Orks is the Bolter.
Looking up the stats in RT, I find myself confused. The Bolter has S3 just like the lowly Autogun but no save modifier and even less range. When compared to the Autogun, it is the worse choice.
Yet Orks can only have bolters and toss any Autoguns they might have off to the lowly Gretchin. How does that make sense?
Also, the Bolt Pistol has S4 and a hefty Save modifier. How can the pistol version pack more oomph than the large version?

Is there some sort of a misprint? I thought Bolters hit with S4.

If anyone could provide the 'official' stats for Bolter, Bolt Pistol and Autogun in RT (and some explanation as well), I'd very much appreciate it. #
Thanks!

Stats changed from time to time, even inside the RT era, but you have me confused. In my copy of RT (an 80s softcover copy) the bolter has a strength of 4 and a save modified of -1. I don't recall anything different in the ork books, but I don't think I'd ever dig them out for a weapon stat. I'd just check the quick reference sheet at the back of either RT or the Battle Manual, depending on when you're talking. (It's something you'd have to hammer out before a game, as there are a few discrepancies between the two.) That said, bolter and autogun look consistent between them to me. Where are you seeing the S3 no save bolter?

Anyway . . . the autogun has some advantages, but I think I'd take the slightly shorter range to get the better penetration.

Well as to explanation for why the Orks go with the Bolter - that's obvious - Loud bang, shooty best. Quiet bang shooty for weedy runt Gretchin

Your copy might have a misprint, or it's easy to muddle it because the Autogun table is above the Bolter entry, but the Autogun description is at the bottom of the previous column. In my copy of the hardback RT page 70 a Bolt Gun is S4, D1 with a -1 save modifier. Same in the softback. Those match the stats on the summary card at the back of both books. The Battle Manual page 44 is the same as is its summary card at the end.

(from the softback)

There are a few custom bolters in Freebooterz on page 41 with tweaked stats, and I didn't notice any bolter stats in Waaargh Orks. Kustom Weapons are on page 112 of 'Ere we go, but I didn't spot any stat tables for bolters thrown in the rest whilst flicking through.

Thanks a lot, guys!

On p.70 of my hardcover version of RT, the stats for Bolter and Bow have switched places. One is where the other is in your pic and vice versa.
It all makes a lot more sense now.
Again, thanks!

Interesting. It's correct in my hardback which says it is the 'second imprint' and we know the first printing was correct (thanks Zhu), I wonder when they made the mistake? Is yours an old copy or the re-released reprint they did a couple of years back at Warhammer World?
