When a battle has ceased to be about mobility, and the time has come to win through sheer, brutal firepower, Imperial forces will adopt the firing line formation. While mainly a tactic of the Guard, it also sees use by Space Marines and Arbitrators when the situation calls for it.
Any Imperial guard may form a firing line by placing 5 figures in a straight line, in contact with each other (Closed Ranks).
All 5 figures must be armed with the same weapon and must fire upon the same target squad.
Any enemy squad that has been targeted by a firing line will suffer a -1 penalty to it's leadership if forced to take a break/rout test that same turn.
