Randomy modern rubbish review?

ManicMan

Lord
after seeing it in the shop and deciding, for the price i could use some scrap from it, I picked up the latest of the GW 'part-works' magazines.. £2.99 for 3 plastic figures with 6 d6s and stuff.. fair enough for painting practice and scrap..

Models... i can't say i think much of.. this is for .. erm.. 'Warhammer: Age of Sigmar- Stormbringer".. personally, i would expect high elves... what with the whole High Elfs and the Stealer of Souls, the black blade 'Stormbringer' but.. nope.. the sculpts are.. unimpressive but some bits like some fancy base stuff is useful and it's good that it comes with altarntive parts so that's good.. the 'human' one.. i guess with a new head might be useable but.. mostly for practice and some scrap parts..

Doesn't seam to advertise the fact but comes with a double sided thin card battle map.. maybe thick paper.. one side a fairly dull desert scene, the other kinda swampy with a bunch of circle.. makes that less useable but fair enough.

intresting double sided 'foldout' which is the army list in a way. gives you a list of the figures, a picture to ID them, and you can do stuff like name them, and tick boxe to say if you have them build/painted/ played with. The two armies appear to be 'The forces of Order' which seam to be.. erm.. humans with wind magic, wood elfs/Ents, and dwarfs.. with the 'Forces of Destruction' being.. Orcs and Goblins.

or more.. that is what i would say they were.. the Forces of Order cut themselves up into 'stormcast eternals', mighty warriors who were snatched at the moment of their death and infused with storm powers by Sigmar.. 'Sylvaneth' which are ancient guardians of the woods are mostly seam like wood elves if they bred with trees.. and 'Kharadron overlords' which.. despite the name, are cyborg tech air trading dwarfs.. kinda weird but might sit okay more as Squats.. I mean, one dwarf has a flamer, a binoic eye and his beard is made of brass pipes? what the hell is this?

The Destruction side.. mm 'Krruleboyz' which arer nasty more pig-ish 'Orrruks' but also some.. 'Hobgrots' cause.. goblins are now grots.. ehuh.. 'Ironjaws' which.. are pretty much the same but a bit more orc like and 'Gloomsprite Gitz' which... are just night goblins.. complete with ball and chain fanatics 'Loonsmasha fanatics' and Squigs..

some advert rubbish with a very bland poster.. and really bad photo composite jobs.. the magazine... mm.. less content, more fancy images then i would like. but that seams to be a modern style. the art isn't good but i kinda like it that the mascot character is female.. don't get that alot in western miniature gaming. how to put together the models is fair enough, the how to paint guide is.. very bad.. I've got some old citadel ones which give FAR more information and use in one page then this does (though to it's credit it does say this is only part one of the guide (it is a part work).. Base coat, Shade, and Highlight.. I simple enough guide to playing your first games which is.. one on one battle with two of the three miniatures you get. it.. seams to say my issue is missing stuff? saying the back cover of this issue has some cut out wound markers (not even old card sheets with pop out stuff).. but my back cover is just a advert for subscripting and saying what come in issues 2 and 3 (10 'gutrippaz' for issue 2, 5 'vindicators' with issue 3).

fiction?... not much, mostly dull pictures.. though now, like said, orcs are orrruks, goblins are 'grots'.. OH and if you get the 'Premium subscripion, you get 4 preimum sets with figures you can use but not in the armie in this set.. including .. river trolls which are now 'Rockgut Troggoths', some weird dragon, and 'orrruk' on some large beast. an airship and some guys on small hotair metal balloons...

So.. for the £2.99 'first issue' price?... the female 'Knight-Arcanum' might be useable with a new head (she comes with two, with and without helmet), the fancy base bit might have some use.. the 'Killaboss' and 'Stab-grot'... well.. the goblin might be okay with some work.. the orc isn't taht good.. base might be okay for something though.. 6 small D6s always come in use.

despite the 'army' side.. seams like a skirmish game.

Not too much use here but.. felt since i picked this up, doing a nice little review thing might be of use to someone.

Losing that big copyright case in the US really set GW down a path where the names in the fluff had to change to get a more secure position under IP law and ugh these names you recite here reflect it.

copyright case? didn't hear about that.. did they try to sue people using their own generic reused names?

but yeah.. awful names..

Just searching around for info.. Is that the one from a few years back where basically... i don't know much about it but they were sued to do with the usage of some names and how alot of the early stuff was basically ripped-off (or atleast, heavily inspired) by other works.. even if those works were equally inspired from others?

Basically correct

It was against a company that sold conversion parts and which was called Chapter House

Oh dear.. something depressing just happened.. I decided to look at the new (and pretty bad) commissar yarrick figure.. and notice that a standard plastic Commissar (generic).. is £21.. that's one sprue, 12 bits of plastic, with a choice of two swords.. for £21..

by size and piece count.. the two figures (techinally 3) which come which this first issue.. is £42 worth? bloody hell.. I know some people are moaning about GW doing like 1000% mark up these days but that is really bad..

Certainly makes acquiring our Oldhammer rarities seem more affordable by comparison eh

just got a almost complete (missing only 3 of the miniatures and some little bits of no importance) copy of Battlemasters, to replace my old missing MOST of the minitures (and while i know where the empire ones are, no clue about 'Chaos' side) and.. well.. much better sculpts and works out FAR cheaper then the modern stuff.

Though i'm trying to limit my purchases next month.. I have X amount, i can spend Y% of X.. with the Heroquests, Battlemasters and.. NB Dragon (couldn't resist it) I'm hoping to not get much for a bit ^_^ though i know something coming up... but that won't really be a huge issue.

GW prices are not that bad and they offer free tracked shipping with order over 100 Euros and no customs and taxes. Comparing that with eBay where I see stuff from UK that is already 25% more expensive then for someone from UK + postage that is, sometimes, pure skinning ( 15 GBP for 15 grams of metal ) and then customs fee and tax once it arrives. So basically something that UK bloke bought for 10 GBP + few GBP for shipping I pay 12.5 GBP + possible shipping of 10GBP+ and then customs fee and taxes 6 GBP + 2 GBP Postal handling for items outside EU under 100 Euros of value hehe That eBay GSP is good for heavier things like big boxes and books but for miniatures/blister? Shipping of 18.5 GBP for blister? + customs that are paid upfront ( so you don't get double taxes ).

There are still some nice miniatures from GW. Most I don't like or understand and all that stich they got, but there is some very interesting miniatures.

Old World should be nice for made to order stuff or something.

Oh, I can do a long bit on scalpers..

when you know (or atleast have enough information to know a rough) production cost of a model, and then look at the price they charge.. yikes.. then compare it to one of the many companies, some smaller, some not so small.. you kinda get to see some of the problems with their prices.

Having just shipped something to Croatia for . . . reasons . . . I have to say the stated tax caught me entirely off guard. I don't know if I did something stupidly wrong or what, but I've shipped stuff to some pretty oddball places, thanks in part to the Oldhammer exchange, and in part to just having friends and family overseas. Croatia surprised me. I can see why GW, who has the experience to ship stuff well to probably every corner of everywhere, looks attractive from that perspective.

But aside from that I'm still not a fan. ;) The rest of us can learn. It just might take some repeated business. So very sorry about that.
