Question about White Dwarf

When did WD become an in house only mag for GW? I came in at issue 111 (acquired 108 - 110 later) and the only thing close to something non-GW at that time that I recall was the Paranoia/40K crossover scenario from issue 112. Was it a gradual change or something that's marked by a specific issue?

It was always a house magazine. The caveat is that GW used to import (and reprint) american RPGs so ran articles for those games - so whilst 40k / Paranoia crossover might appear non-gw it wasn't really because GW were still publishers of Paranoia in Europe - as they were od Runequest et al. Heroquest was technically an MB game, and not designed by the GW studio - The Eyes of Chaos scenario for that was in WD #145.

Basically the whole thing went downhill after the move to nottingham with #77 ;)

Great link WP! Cheers

Might start collecting the older issues. It would be nice to replace the ones I used to have but being a sucker for nostalgia I could really go for those pre-100 issues.

There are definitely gems amongst the older ones

The cover art alone draws me in every time.

There was a similar page with the covers of Metal Hurlant which was great to flick through. The screen saver on the GW tills used to have the old covers cycling through as well and I once found a youtube video that was just 2000ad covers in sequence form prog 1 all the way through to 2014.

Pre-100's are solid. Best part is that most can be picked up for less than minis from that era! ;)

I was beginning to wonder how much different eras of WD are worth. Some reasonable prices all over Ebay but the price per issue is going to start getting painful with so many to collect.

The trick is to scour second hand shops and to look for people selling lots. Otherwise shipping will set you back more than the magazines.

To be fair, anything beyond the first 20 are practically worthless. I've been given multiple collections over the years, as they're not even worth selling for anything other than a nominal sum. Wait for a bulk lot nearby and you'll get a pile for pennies each.

The dreaded collection only sale!

Or the bestest sales ever! I've got some killer bargains on collection only sales, as well as buying up extra goodies from the seller when picking up. Helps that I live in the centre of the country, and in Lead Vegas, so there are a lot of ex employees/collectors round here.

Sold items search on ebay says they sell regularly for £2-3.

But the killer is postage, if only there was some kind of annual Oldhammer meet-up where people could trade their old tat ;)

Also, top ebay tip. Someone doesn't sell a lot you're looking at (collection only or whatever) - contact the seller after the sale has ended ask they what they'd take for it + postage. Many a bargain to be had.

Tempting.

Ah, go-on go-on go-on go-on.

I went mad for the issues between 90-110 or so a few years ago (I might have been lucky at the time, they seemed cheaper before the forum and explosion of 80's GW blogs) and as Zhu says, postage was what made me eventually stop :)

Pretty silly buying issues in ones and twos when the postage to Australia was costing more than the magazines themselves

If only there was one everyone could attend...

Got my first pre-100 WD today, issue 65 and wow... a totally different mag to what I came into in '89 with issue 111! I can see why people bitched at the time about WD and GW. No one likes change.
