Phreedh's chaos warband challenge WIP

Figured I'd start a WIP thread for my chaos warband for the Chaos Warband Challenge: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=2287

So, for my inaugural post here's the selection of miniatures in recently primed (and ready for paint) condition. Will have to level the bases with a little putty before finishing them off.

If you can't make it out, that's a warband of Slaanesh consisting of:
Human Champion - level 15 Hero, attributes: bestial face, fits. Reward: steed of Slaanesh
6 Orcs
8 Beastmen

I've also included the dismounted version of the champion.

I'm hoping to be able to finish them on time but I don't really think that's realistic given my record with previous painting challenges. =D I will try though. Aiming for a pale, pastel type of paintjob on them. Blues, pinks, green and turquoise. Totally new domain for me, so I'm expecting it to take a while.

The models are all old Metal Magic/Hobby Products minis (previously made by Mega Miniatures, now scattered. I think Midlam Minis do the beastmen, at least).

Agreed on the beastmen being nifty. Are they bob olley sculpts?
Indeed they are. As Olley as they come. =)

He did beastmen, centaurs, dwarves and chaos dwarves for Metal Magic in the early 90s. All are still in production, but have been spread out since Mega Miniatures sold off their molds to other companies. Armourcast have a bunch of the dwarves, Midlam have the beastmen (and possibly centaurs too, don't remember... maybe Center Stage have them).

I'm glad I got most of the Metal Magic stuff from Mega before they closed. It would be a nightmare trying to collect it all now with so many different manufacturers. Some are even cast in resin now. Imagine having Metal Magic minis in resin. For shame.

I thought I recognised some of those orcs from somewhere. Metal magic produced some fantastic minis back in the day. I've still got an early 90's calendar that they produced to showcase their miniatures. It was a series of dioramas done by Michael Imming & as you can imagine it was truly inspiring. Even after all these years I still have it hanging in my room.... regardless of the dates being out of wack!

EM4 have some of their old stuff too. I bought a bunch of the "phagon beastmen" a while back to use as RT beastmen proxies.

I'm tempted to get some minis from Midlam Minis now, nostalgia bug has bitten me again.

Thanks Phreedh.

I have most of the fantasy stuff Metal Magic produced back in the day. Lovely stuff indeed! Glad I could inspire...

Painting have commenced, btw. A pic when there's more progress to show...

The first WIP cometh. This is all very early in the process, I always block in the base colours and then shade everything. After that I pick out metals, eyes and start highlighting.

Basecoated in an olive green or something, from Vallejo. Shaded with Thraka Green wash. Purple cloth (and lips!) is a VGC purple... very rich in pigments. Even seriously watered down it covers like crazy. Other parts have been washed with various browns (old chestnut wash, a watered down foundation brown, gryphonne sepia). All six orcs have a braid running down their backs. That is (for now) painted tentacle pink and washed with Baal red.

I'm aiming for purple cloths, red-brown weaponry, caucasian skinned shields (think leather face) + black leather details (mostly). Pretty much everything still white in this pic will end up either black or "metal" - which I realize is not a colour. Anyhoo. Skin will be highlighted up to a rather less green level.

I miss tentacle pink. Also, thanks a lot for posting that pig headed beast man pic, you made me go buy a bunch  ;)
Ha! :) did you get all the sculpts?

I got the set of 4, is that the lot? I just wrote a pigman character into our D&D adventure, so when I saw your pics it seemed an interesting universal harmonization...

Yep, there are 4 of each type: http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lost ... tasy#C1055

For those interested, the orcs can be bought from Midlam (1039-codes are the ones I'm doing, they're the largest of the bunch - Metal Magic hobgoblins, actually)

Beastmen here:

And I just splooged all over Midlam when I realized they've put the long oop ram-beast standard bearer back in production!

And a few weeks in and about three weeks from the end, I have... three orcs, half done. Base coats and washes are done, metallics are done (except for highlighting). Next is skin, then purple cloths and details. After that I have three more... and eight beastmen and a mounted champion. Fsck me, I won't be done on time. =)

Well... I've managed to more or less finish the first model of the warband (the out of focus one in the centre) and have two more with just skin and details to do.

Sorry about the out of focus pic... =/
