Path to Glory WFB3 on Index Warhammer Fantasy Online Rules Index Project

Dear Oldhammer Community Members,

We have a unique opportunity to make our voices heard and contribute to the enrichment of our shared passion. Maybe you know, FlammableHero, has added a different game system on his WHFB app, but has so far declined to add WFB3 and other Oldhammer editions due to time constraints and a reluctance to accept outside help. However, we should not be discouraged!

Imagine the advantage of having a wikipedia of rules that would make it possible to find information quickly, speed up rule verification, promote the WFB3 system...

It's time to show our determination and commitment to our hobby. Here are some suggestions for constructive and respectful lobbying:
  1. Express Our Interest and Passion: Let FlammableHero know how significant the addition of WFB3 and Oldhammer editions would be for our community. Share your personal experiences and explain why these editions are important to you. Highlight the unique aspects of these editions and how they enhance our gaming experience.
  2. Propose Collaborative Solutions: Even if FlammableHero is reluctant to accept direct help, we can suggest methods that would allow him to easily validate pages as we go. For example, we could create preliminary content that he could simply review and approve. This way, we can ensure that the content meets his standards while also contributing to the project.
  3. Stay Respectful and Understanding: FlammableHero has his own constraints, and we must respect that. Be patient and understanding in your communications. A positive and constructive approach is always more effective. Opinions?
Together, we can make a difference. Let's make our voices heard and show FlammableHero that adding WFB3 and Oldhammer editions would be a tremendous benefit to our community. By working together and promoting our shared passion, we can move our hobby forward!

Good luck and all the best!

I quite like looking up things in my rulebooks and making notes on paper though.

I think if people want to experience WFB 3rd edition and all it's glory, they should buy a copy and get stuck in, or find someone that has a copy and borrow it.

For me at least, the notion of playing from copied copyright protected rules online is not for me, and I would not like to be associated with that site.

Dusting off the mod hat... Sorry, but one of the board rules is to avoid linking through to GW material that is within copyright that has been republished by someone who don't own the copyright. Typically this really aimed at linking to scans of rulebooks and the like and this might be a bit more of a messy one as I assume the text is not lifted 1:1 from the rulebooks, but it's clearly GW's IP republished. So for the moment I've just removed the actual link. Leaving people to resort to the wonders of these new fangled Internet Search engines should they wish to go looking. Apologies, but we do try to steer a wide path clear of GW's legal griffons. Will leave the thread open as discussion on digital rules is quite interesting.

Still it's an impressive piece of work (surprised GW have left it online), but quite fond of my books however on those rare occasions a game gets played.

Certainly I can see the value of the extra bits like indexes. I have an index for WFRP that I used all the time when running games (back in the day, ahem sorry chaps, will get there).

I guess maybe the author didn't ever do any WFB3 and so the rules probably don't have the appeal that 4th and onwards do for them. I expect you'd probably have to produce the text for them to incorporate into their site, a fait accompli if you like. I can't imagine how much time it must have taken then to create what they already have. How much of the text is just recopied and how much is the rules, but re-worded? I should go and dig out my 4th and have a look, but I forget quite where it's stashed away!

speed up rule verification,
That's why we have god like GMs to make the decisions for us humble players :) Personally other than some long winded distracted discussions about a rule where the wording is a bit ambiguous (often a dreaded double negative) it's never been too much of a problem - "roll a D16, 1-3 and its'' ..." often does the trick. That might come from the emphasis on more of a narrative game style in some of the older systems however. Certainly I think as the games became more popular and the number of people you might meet across the table increased the need (desire?) for more defined boundaries (rules) became a somewhat natural development. Even more so now with the strong tournament scene.

A while ago I found this interesting Q&A with Andy Chambers from a Finnish convention in August 1996. I think that places it as late 4th edition, about 2 months before 5th edition. There are a number of modern in depth interviews with GW developers (Orlygg's site, Filmdeg's channel), but this is the closest I've ever seen to one from back in the day.

A lot of the interview is back and forth about Chaos armies, but it's interesting to see his views at this point in time around the idea of a living ruleset being maintained and updated by the game developers over the lifecycle of the game - basically being dead against it.

Given having a complex ruleset that you then don't maintain is an alien notion in our current day, I have to kind of place myself in his shoes and assume it's due to a combination of (then) low numbers of internet users, existing crunch at the studio and (then) head-office views on how it might affect sales.

I think that if you constantly update the current ruleset and make those updates available, you restrict sales of the next ruleset that has those updates in it.
There will be people that don't buy it as they already have the latest changes from updates/errata/Q&A etc.

But he does say some stuff that makes no sense, like what is the point of an errata if only one of you has it??
Well you can show it to the person that does not have it.
