Tiny Basement Wars
Serf
I had a great gaming session with my boys this morning, playing a very rules-light Space Hulk variant with some Orks, Grey Knights and dungeon tiles from a D&D board game. Sometimes the best sessions have more to do with rolling dice and playing with little army guys than playing by the rule book.
The Orks (numbering 40 and run by my 9 year old) played the role of Tyrannids and jammed the halls.
The six-man Grey Knight squad (run by my 12 year old) split into two groups of three. One GK squad headed North and drew away most of the green skins. The other headed East, to the end of the spaceship to face down the leader (Gazghull). For many turns, the GK held off the Orks. But, eventually, the Orks pressed in close and their numbers overwhelmed the GK's.
The East squad was caught up in melee, and eventually lost two of the three. Their last man stood toe-to-toe with Gaz, but was gunned down by Gaz in a hail of bullets.
The north squad came under heavy (if poorly aimed) fire from the boyz, followed by hand to hand combat once the green skins pressed in close. Two brothers fell to the ork blades. The last man standing nearly headed North to get revenge. But, a cool head prevailed and he backtracked to the long hallway where he faced down Gaz (over the fallen body of the prior GK's).
Three of the last GK's five shots landed on Gaz, and Gaz's luck ran out with a poor saving throw attempt. The boyz closed in on the remaining GK, but he knew that he had fulfilled his destiny, as set by the Emperor. It would be a good death.
A full report, along with a comic-book style battle report and a description of the "rules" (consisting of two post-it-notes), is at:
