Oldhammer Skirmish?

Hi!

I've been wondering about the feasibility of an Oldhammer skirmish type game, much like Mordheim but with the 3rd edition extra gubbins. Has anyone else tried out gaming with a dozen or so figures a side?

I know that the Chaos books feature gribbly and random smaller warbands but could a similar system with lots of random charts and assorted fluff work for the other, non chaosy races too? Would a Dwarven, Elven or Empire force be possible?

All the best!

Hi Spacecowsmith,

It's a good thing to wonder about. You could just play 3eWHFB using small units of scouts and an independent character or two and get a skirmish style game. You will end up with something approximating Rogue Trader in many ways.

But why not just base it on Mordheim and then experimentally add special rules from 3rd edition you might want? Mordheim is a well supported system with many an official and fan made force list and works well to scratch the Warhammer Skirmish level itch. The fact that is has an in built campaign system is a very strong feature when it comes to playing with a group - these type of games come into their own in a group campaign.

Personally I think that 3rd edition is quite complex and clunky for a small skirmish game where as Mordheim is specifically designed with this in mind. To my mind skirmish systems should be accessible to new players, game play should flow quickly from player to player and should resolve in a reasonable amount of time (small games in less than an hour and large ones in a couple of hours at most perhaps).

A couple of us (Mr.Saturday, Just John [& Cheetor in a supporting capacity ;) ] ) are planing on running an Oldhammer participation game at Knavecon in Limerick Ireland in the coming month which will be based off the Mordheim rule set using Slann, Halfling and Fimir forces, so you will get to find out how we get on with this then :) .

I'm GMing a Realms of Chaos narrative campaign. One of the players has a Norse group and the antagonists are dwarves. I just let the Norse player pick any miniatures up to 150-200 points, (can't remember which, maybe it was only 100), I did a similar thing with the Dwarves.

 Like...like bread without cheese? why would you want to remove chaos from it., even dwarves are more fun with chaos 8-)
Nah Ok I get it. I second Theottovonbismark, if what you want looks and smells like mordheim, my best advice would be "use it" ;)

Hi!

It does sound like a plan to use Mordheim which I must admit I had kind of been leaning towards. The other option had actually been to use Rogue Trader as is and just add some magical items!

All the best!

I may be very wrong (but I'm expecting to be told so if it's the case ) but I believe Rogue trader and 2nd ed are actually quite the same game magic and technology aside, this would make sense...
