Older (Perry?) Trolls

Hi Folks,

I'm working on these chaps at the moment. I'm having no luck identifying their age /edition as they don't appear in the collector's guide and I can't find them on solegends. Nor is my general Google Foo turning up anything other than the later ones with the separate heads (these are one-piece castings)). I'm hoping someone here knows a bit about them???

The frightening thing is that as I typed a generic "those aren't GW are they?" something about them looked familiar (and not because they're knock-offs of other models!). The detail? Features? Kind of but not quite 90's GW vibe?

Those could be Inquisition miniatures!

Sure enough, Google search "Inquisition miniatures troll" and they are the first photo that comes up:

The fun thing is, I'd never seen these models before! I have an odd affection for Inquisition miniatures. I guess it's because they were Australian, and I sometimes come across their models in second-hand lots bought locally. One of my first painted metal models was a goblin of theirs. Lots of obvious rip-offs like "not Skaven" and the like. I must photograph every one that I own, since there isn't much on them online.

Your ones are of course copies of poses from three of the 4th ed. stone trolls and one of the river trolls. I think I own each of the GW equivalent models. I'd love to own this set, too!

zoggin-eck, you sir are a veritable font of old-skool goodness! Thanks for tracking those down and in such short order mate. Any idea on the year of production?

I'm even more pleased to hear they're Australian. Knowing that I'll have to name the one with the largest belly "Boonie"

That's a fantastic, appropriate name!

Sure enough, it seems that ebay seller is one of the stores that sell (or used to sell?) their models (Military Hobbies Adelaide).

I can't quite tell if the company exists still. I can see the odd reference online (like a post in 2008 saying they still operate) and apparently they only sell to Aussie stores. No web presence at all it seems? I might one day go mad and try to order some, just to see if they're still made. Like some really ugly old Citadel, I feel nostalgic despite knowing that they're fairly ordinary models. Funnily, the vermin/Skaven gatling gun from them I own was used just as an alternate Warp fire-thrower for years, only for gatling gun teams to appear in later editions anyway :)

There's a fairly incomplete gallery here if anyone's interested:

Nice to see some pics of Scotia Grendel scenery other than their own site's tiny pics:

Good luck painting them, by the way! As for the year, I'd guess just after the citadel ones? (so '93 onwards?). I actually have no idea what year Inquisition started, so could have been later. I remember buying some of their models in 1994-1995.

I remember seeing them in gaming shops in the early 90's for a couple of years. My mates and I used to joke at how soft they were, I think they were cast from pure lead.

Mostly terrible looking minis, coupled with "soft as butter" lead content, relegated the miniature company to the historical scrapheap.

They are a touch on the soft side and you're right, I think the lead content is quite high. Having said that I've got lots of stuff from that era and before across a range of companies and most of it is soft by comparison to today's miniatures.

definitely stone troll influence but the body looks like the c20 range.

I actually kinda like these

They remind me more of the MM40s but that's just perception so I suppose we don't have to argue. =D

Comparing the two pictures - I'm not sure which I like more. Em do I add a few more troll to the horde?
