Oakbound's new roleplay system needs Market Research help!

Hi guys,

Mentioned this briefly over in the General Retro area.

Oakbound have been offered a license to create a miniatures game based on the 80s-90s comic book and cartoon legend, Bucky O'Hare. We need to know if this is a viable market as it looks like being quite an involved, expensive (and of course very exciting!) venture. If you have time and inclination, could you fill in the following survey and ask anyone else who might be interested to do the same?

At the moment this is early stages so needs to be kept a bit hush-hush so no big blog posts please, subtle distribution only!

Thank you.

I secretly filled the form in the most silent manner. Someone's watching me, I have to go...

That's ok, it was just me making sure you didn't make any speclling mistakes!

(Spot the deliberat errors!) ;)

Re: Oakbound's new roleplay system needs Market Research hel

I filled it in, but I have to say I'm probably too old to be your target market, I had, and still have no idea who the potential licence was!

S'okay, I think this is a bit 'niche'. ;) The question is, did the aesthetic appeal regardless?

Filled it in.

Thinking about it after completing the survey (I can be a bit slow sometimes), I would be most interested in a mix of a spaceship battle dog-fight game and/or a skirmish style game.

Not for me, I'm afraid. I'm not big on cartoons in general, and cartoon anthropomorphic animals even less, sorry!

Good luck with it, though! :)

Re: Oakbound's new roleplay system needs Market Research hel

Never heard of Bucky O'Hare, but then I was too busy wargaming and roleplaying throughout the 80s and 90s to read comics. It does sound a bit like turning such an old, possibly obscure cartoon thing into a current RP game might be a case of 'missed the boat'.

Re: Oakbound's new roleplay system needs Market Research hel

This is what I'm trying to establish. It still has a strong cult following, but the question is- does the cult following play wargames? Or are there Bucky fans among current wargamers? If not then I won't pursue the license, however much I love Bucky! (I'll just sculpt myself a Jenny for personal satisfaction.... ;) )

Re: Oakbound's new roleplay system needs Market Research hel

I've responded

Remember having a couple comics and the animated show vaguely. Can't name any of the characters and don't remember what it was all about.

So I'd personally have no interest.

I wonder if a board game might be the better medium?
Lower barrier to entry for the cult following?

Of course I'm just speculating here

Not for me, I had no idea Bucky O'hare existed before your thread in the Retro forum. It's a cool opportunity and I'd back it somehow, but would'nt buy into it wholesale.

The board game option is definitely pulling more interest from the Bucky fan circles I've intorduced the survey to than the Bucky theme is in the wargaming circles. My hesitation with the board game is that compared to a miniatures-based game the startup and printing costs are astronomical. I think unless it could be restricted to a card-based game (my current best option) it's a non-starter. If you haven't heard of Bucky btw I'd recommend checking out the world- lobotomised Toads turned into crack troops by the computer they created to fulfil their consumerist desires- it's a staunch warning about the perils of capitalism!

It would definitely have to be a mix of space-based and on-the-ground skirmish action.

Hm!

The board game comment makes perfect sense.

Really interesting stuff.

Re: Oakbound's new roleplay system needs Market Research hel

An RPG might make a splash and is pretty low cost.

Miniatures might sell to people not buying the game, but it's a pretty niche market so who knows.

Re: Oakbound's new roleplay system needs Market Research hel

I did the survey in and to be honest I'd only be intetested in minis and not a game as such. I can't really remember Bucky and his mates but I do remember the Toad Air Marshal. It'll be interesting to see what comes of this even if its only for potential to revisit other ' lost' IP's

Re: Oakbound's new roleplay system needs Market Research hel

Passed my SurveyMonkey limit so have moved the survey (with a few changes) to a new hosting. Please keep filling in, this one's more general but still targeted at a couple of forthcoming releases from Oakbound.
