Newer Unit Stats for 4th/5th?

WARDUKE

Serf
Hi all,

New to the forums, but 20 year WFB vet. Trying to get a couple of the guys I used to play 4th/5th edition with to resurrect it and give it a go. So far, both have asked if there was a resource out there where they could use some of the newer units in the game with the old rules.

That being the case, I wanted to ask if anyone could point me to any conversion stats that people might have done on units that didn't exist in 4th/5th?

Some examples: Skaven Plague Furnace, Skaven Poison Wind Mortar, Skaven Warp Lightning Cannon, Goblin Araknarok Spider, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Ha, good to see a 4th/5th fan.

Actually, I can't think of anything you would need to change at all for those units? It's 1st to 3rd that you'd have to (easily) add int, wp and cool. Anything from 6th/7th will have mention of "unit strength", but just ignore it.

Thanks for the reply zoggin-eck.

I was really wondering about points costs for some of the things that exist now that didn't exist in 4th/5th.
I know that those have changed for a lot of units, so just wondering if any one ever did any conversion
work.

Ah, Ok. I think you'll find few people playing 4th/5th, fewer using new units and even fewer concerned enough to change the points :) (Certainly on this forum...)

Personally I've never bothered too much as to whether the points costs in those editions were "balanced", let alone if new stuff matches. It hasn't come up yet, but I had the idea of both myself and opponent taking an equal number of "new" units so there's no hard feelings if an Araknarok wins the day, for example.

If it's points you're interested in :

ta-da! Or go to the source and use 2nd Ed WFB or 40K:RT. You'll need to back convert stats from 4th edition if you want to create an even playing field, as Zog suggests those editions weren't well balanced by points. Not that WFB2 or RT is either, but they at least admit it, provide a system to work out points for yourself and illustrate where the holes are so you can accommodate.

That's the thing though, most of the "missing" units are the weird things like war machines and monsters with 100 special rules, not so much based on stats. I wouldn't bother for a moment worrying about the points limit (then again, I ignore all army restrictions and limits already, so points is probably next).

I'd love to hear how yours games turn out Warduke. I found so many memories flooding back after not playing an edition for 15+ years (I'm pretty jealous of those who played earlier editions and get a chance to revisit something from 30 years ago!).

I haven't made a lengthy and detailed comparison between what was available at the end of 8th and 4th, BUT the things I have noticed Wood Elf Wild Riders and Skaven Stormfiends certainly have new statlines, easily done using WFB2 / 40K:RT (and I guess most of the war-machines would behave like RT Heavy Weapons) same with the giant spider Warduke mentions. Most special rules don't have PVs in the system as their applicability is not universally constant in the same way statlines are.

Of course, I like to determine PVs for scenarios to ensure games aren't entirely deterministic from the outset.
