New Zoat mini! With poll :)

Ok ok calm down , not yet :)
But I want to start making the skeleton and planning and I need to know some things before.
I will make first one for fantasy and then I'll turn it into a 40K.
So my questions are mostly for the 40K version, here we go :

1) For Rogue trader its suppossed to use standard weapons like bolters , flamer and heavy bolters, but for other W40K they are described using Tyranid weapons ,
so what kind of weaponry will you preffer?

2) Will you want a leader , a regular Zoat or both? This question is for both 40k and Fantasy.

3) Size , this is so important for 40k , because the old zoats are VERY tight to the terminator base size, so do you want exact size(wich I think is a bit small)? Or preffer a slightly bigger one even if will not fit on a terminator base?

Ok thats all. I'm so happy about how my Fimir model is being recieved so I'm very pleased to go for more old minis!

Ambull , Pisceans , Fimir Meargh , and a Unnamed greater demon are on my list too

For me, a match with the RT models would be better. They can still be used as bolters, but they would look better in a unit.

I'll take whatever you fancy making!

If it is a leader, larger could work, but I don't mind :)

Fantastic!

1) Non-Tyranid weapons, not 100% organic, but slightly cybernetic / grafted on is cool imho. Power axe? Bolters? Autocannons?
2) Command (Psyker) and grunts and heavy weapons.
3) For WFB they should fit on a 25 * 50 cavalry base.

I think with non Tyranid-slave Zoats you've got great opportunity to make stuff up that is more interesting, although fleshing out more 'what might have been' might prove more popular.

Shouldn't a Zoat go into a monster base? Like the ogres? They are big have 3 or more wounds... I can do it to fit 25x50 , but I think it will be a much nicer mini if I have the 40x40 possibility.
Thoughts?

I quite like the bioweapons looking like their technological equivalent. Maybe you could try a "gigeresque" look for typical 40k wepaons (bolters, flamers missiles launchers) so that it fts both approaches. Any path you takle though, I'll be interested.

2) Will you want a leader , a regular Zoat or both? This question is for both 40k and Fantasy.
Both of them with interchangeable wepons for the trooper at least.

I'd rather have the same size as the others to fit on a terminator base (you can trick with the pose though) ùaybe a bigger dude as a champion

Not-Ambulls and Not-Pisceans and not Malal greater demons? yeah bring those along too !

Zoats are a good choice. I think it is better to focus on coverage one or two races well rather than trying to cover every gap where there are no suitable models to choose from. I think a full set of Fimir sculpts > one of everything else. Just my 2 cent opinion.

Regarding weapons, if I was sculpting them I would make all weapons modular if feasible, that keeps options open. You will never be able to have everyone on side for any particular choice of weapons. You can develop various compatible weapons for them - and then use same weapons in other projects etc. Some people will just want the weapons if they are really nice.

John Pickford made some Zoats. I suggest you google "John Pickford Zoats", e.g.:

Anyhoo good work and looking forward to seeing yer greens!

John's zoat was done as a tournament mini for my club a couple of years ago - the concept was that he was a zoat bodyguard (referencing back to the zoat terror squads in the Eldritch Raiders list). Here's my painted version of the mini:

He later converted the green for me into a Blood Bowl version, which is available through Impact Miniatures :)

Sounds a good idea.
When first released the Zoats were on Cavalry bases, although they did take up most of the base, so 40mm base might be better for today.
Why not sculpt them open handed like they are holding weapons, and then supply different weapons ('organic', 'bolters' 'Shuikriens' etc) as a choice? This also allows for conversion with comtempary weapons. Would it be too problematic to do seperate arms fitting onto tabs?
Unit leader would be a good idea.

By the way, no one has mentioned Space Slann! :)

They might get some love from Mantic in the future, Cheetor told me this recently:

Mantic have shown this image for an upcoming DreadBall team. Their DreadBall teams have, without exception crossed over into the Deadzone/Warpath ranges.

Important to note here is that these models will not be resin-plastic.

If Mantic made cyclopean lizard bog men next I would not bat a nictitating membrane.

Zoats are a type of centaur, so get a cavalry base. They aren't over 10' tall so don't get a 40x40 (which I think is the deciding factor, rather than wounds).

Of course you can do what you like, but if you want to do old-school Zoats, they should be based (and armed) compatibly with the rulez (40K:RT/WFB2/WFB3). If you want to create a proxy army for modern Tyranids, then make their base-sizes and armament compatible with that. If you can do something that does both, then you might be on to a winner!

Well you did... ;) Lets see , step by step.

About the weapon change....it can be done of course , but add more complication to the mini , anyway I think I'll do the hands with the handler and trigger and then the weapon will assembly apart, but it cant work for a heavy bolter for example.
So I'll stick to "one hand" weapons at first , then if people demands I can resculpt one to have a heavy weapon

Everything ended the moment you just wrote 'Zoat'. We will be taking almost anything you give us!
And Ambulls! And Pisceans! And Space Slanns! And...!

I'd personally want any zoats to fit on a cavalry base.

Leaders should not be nay bigger than the troops.

For fantasy axes with swirly cylinders are a must.

That is however just my take.

Look forward to seeing what you decide on.

If you're looking for inspiration here is a shameless wishlisting attempt :

Zoats+-+Book+of+Astronomican.jpg

Maybe doing one body and multiple arm options (fantasy or RT) would be the easy way? you'd need 3 pairs for the RT version and 2 for the fantasy one (champion and trooper)

My plan is to sculpt one main body (the horse part) and then 1 torso for regular and one torso for the leader. Both for fantasy , then cast them , and them turn both into 40K or RT by adding a lot of futuristic stuff and the possibility to swap weapons , if this minis are casted in resin they will be easy to convert by the people andmake them unique and even use magnets for interchangeable weapons.

Now I have to dare to say this: As I don't have a Zoat in my collection , and its a rather complex mini , would someone be gracefull enough to "rent" me one just to have a real reference , and I'll bring it back once its done? Just asking... :?

Only one I have is the resin one Jon had made by John Pickford (really splendid btw) so I don't know how it scales with the traditionnal ones. Maybe someone who has one can at least take scaled pictures from all sides. From what I understand, a zoat body is mainly a rhinoceros body with scales...

Ok....thats crazy f***ng cooollll !!! I was searching for good Zoats pics and crossed with this!!!!

WOW , If someone tell me "I want one" I'll do it like a mad man! Love minotaurs , and minotaurs with bolters?? EVEN MORE!
