New Painting Space is a true Work in Progress

So I got kicked out of the attic and into the basement. (My wife wants the spare bedroom with the television to be tidier and less . . . "dusty.") On the other hand, I got a lovely old teacher's desk in trade. I figure I'll cover the desktop to spare it the indignity of paint spills and gluing accidents. Hopefully. The view is a bit crappy, but a screen might help with that. And hey, if someone comes to steal my miniature collection I'll be prepared. ;) (To stab myself in both feet, probably.)

This is a bit off the usual WIP subject, but there are miniatures in it. That are in progress. More than one, even.

one thing that always annoys the hell out of me (okay.. for a number of reasons, alot of things annoy me to various degrees but anyway) is that in the UK, we haven't really discovered basements in houses. You get the odd basement flat but the amount of houses which easily could have a basement to increase space... such a shame (I do know we have a bit worse problem with water.. A building I work in has tons of problems with the water due to the basement level (or atleast, underground level floor).. but it can be dealt with so it's just a huge waste..

That would have required us to dig deeper foundations which would cost more money ... do wish my house had a cellar, we've got about 5' at the back of the house and about 6" at the front below the floor! That said every house I "knew" growing up home/family/friends had cellars so I did assume they were normal for many years.

Our lofts tend to be hard to convert too, especially in new builds
Once more the good old British scrimping using lighter filled in trusses in new builds rather than more traditional roof construction so you just don't get the voids easily. They are busy doing a new roof on a house up the road which is quite interesting as they are adjusting the pitch so they are currently building the new roof over the old, which I assume they will take out once they get a temporary membrane or something on the new rafters.

Anyhow, sorry derailing. We should have another "workspace thread"...

EDIT :- tagged a few threads from the past: https://forum.oldhammer.org/tags/workspace/

Alot of basesment can be smaller then the floor size but yeah, still a bit more pricey but I think worth it.
Can't convert my loft to make it bigger.. Not rich enough to own my own home.

but yeah, partly my fault for the derailing ^_^ all it jealousy over such space to be able to have such a nice workspace. One reason for my slow painting is lack of space to have too much on the go at once, so things have to be put to one side unless I'm more directly working on them.

I'm feeling good about the move. Mind you, it was an easy one, since I just moved floors and not houses. I've got it to a point where I can use it now, and I'm getting some work done again, which is helping me to realize just what else needs doing. (I really need a wash sink in the basement. We had one, but lost it in a sewer lateral replacement. It's past time to get a new one installed.)

Anyway, I think we can consider this particular work in progress finished and I'll post some additional pics to the hobby space thread.

Have you decided what to cover the desk with? Fortunately my current painting desk is IKEA's finest cheap rubbish :) So my large cutting mat does a decent enough job of it.
