Name That Marine!

ManicMan

Lord
Looking at the latest painted marine by AngryGriifin got me thinking about the names of some of the early/Orginal Imperial Space Marines. Lot of them are clear references to stuff.. but some I seam to just.. not quite understand.. So.. Lets Name that Marine!

Going with the first RT101 set from WD #99 we have:
- Brother Ward :- This is a reference to Burt Ward, who was well known for playing Dick Greyson/Robin the Boy Wonder in the 1966-1968 Batman TV series (plus spin-offs)

- Brother Reeves :-
- Captain Crabb :-

- Captain Dozier :- This is a reference to William Dozier who, among other things, was well known for playing the Narrator in the 1966-1968 Batman TV Series as well as the creator of the show

out of this first set of first set of 18 (the 18th is wounded Marine with no name, All are references to the 60s Batman TV show. However, 4 Stand out.. Basehart, Harris, Reeves and Crabb. No clue who they are references to.. Crabb might be a reference to Buster Crabbe (well known for playing Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers) but that is just a lose guess going on the general theme.. which might mean that Basehart was Richard Basehart, known for being Admiral Harriman Nelson in the 1964-1968 Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea TV show, as well as later Wilton Knight in the pilot of Knight Rider, and the narrator for the intro and ending. (and in case people too young or not English don't know, these shows were popular and shown on TV tv well into the 80s and early 90s)..

still leaves Harris & Reeves if the other two are right..

As for the second wave.. much less of a theme I think.. pretty much no clue on any of them..
- Brother Leach
- Brother Craven
- Brother Sawyer
- Brother Matthews
- Brother Potter
- Brother Martins
- Brother Holt
- Brother McCarthy
- Brother Morris
- Sgt. Burgess
- Brother Byrne
- Brother Roberts
- Sgt. Payne
- Brother Leevers
- Brother Fielding
- Brother Slater
- Brother Jacobs

(Treacher Marine not included as that isn't a name)

On the same theme Reeves could well be George Reeves from the Adventures of Superman television series. That played forever on US television, much like the Adam West Batman. Sgt. Burgess could easily be Burgess Meredith again. (Why not double dip. He's got a cool name and played a cool character.) I'm trying to follow the theme more to see who else pops up. Checked out Wonder Woman, the Incredible Hulk, the Spiderman shorts off the Electric Company, the US Buck Rogers TV series of the era . . . coming up short. Maybe they moved over to something else. Bands they liked? I'm terrible with 70s/80s rockers, so maybe you can spot some names. (I was that weird kid who liked classical music. Go figure.)

problem is, Citadel being a UK company, I would more think it's stuff that would be seen on UK TV and while I think it might have.. for some reason, the old George Reeves Superman didn't really seam to get much play over here.. probably because he was always far more USA focused with the whole 'American way' and stuff.. Again, Electric Company didn't get shown in the UK at all as far as I know. Buck Rogers in the 25th Century did get alot of screen as it was popular in the UK but no names seam to jump out from that..

Wonder woman, yep.. but not as much and none of them names jump out form that..

I was wondering if Burgess was again the great Burgess Meredith (who was a bit disappointed that despite all his great work, he would mostly be known for Batman) but doesn't really show a theme for that second lot when they could have gone with alot more..

mm.. If I look at that second lot with popular bands in the UK then... possible.. the only Craven I can think of it's a bit too early for (Beverly Sawyer), Don't think Dr Hook was that well known in the UK so wouldn't thought Ray Sawyer.. Matthews brings to mind the Dave Matthews band but that is a bit early again.. only a couple seam to really go with that.. so.. Not really sure.. and knowing what I know about the tastes in music around citadel at the time, I don't see some names I would expect..

That said.. Slater & Fielding were both in Dixon of Dock Green.. while it's not been seen in the UK on tv for some time, it's a well remembered UK shown and quite ingrained in culture.. but I'm not sure..

^Oh, I agree with you, but I've no real clue what did and didn't play in the UK. For reasons. And if Batman did . . . well . . . who knows what else did too? (An aside: if you look closely at certain scenes there's a "Lighted Lucite Map of Gotham City" in the Batcave. (One of the few things not called "Bat-thing.") Well, it's a map of my modest Midwestern town! The Bat is even looking at it the right way, though it's backwards from the viewer's perspective, since it was always filmed from behind with Batman seen through it, like a window. Anyway, carry on. I'll not interfere. I'm just curious, so making an attempt to be helpful.

^_^ no problem
and yeah, always interesting how some props, mostly maps, are done by editing or just using other bits. Specially in the old days, Prop making was alot of Kit-bashing (kinda wander.. in the UK show 'Callan', he loves to collect and paint up model soldiers which... do seam to be the standard gaming miniatures and in fact, does play a game in atleast one episode.. show was 67 - 72.. be interesting to figure out what miniatures they were.. mostly Napoleonic figures and for that time period I wonder what rule set if any but that's for another topic).
