My Oldhammer Wood Elf army - so far...

Greetings Oldhammeronians,

My old school Wood Elf army as it stands; probably about half of what it'll end up being. I was inspired by the army done by the Masterworks Guild. Finding the models and putting together units is half the fun. Stripping and tidying old figures and breathing new life into them is also satisfying. The figures are a mix of 80s and 90s models. TBH I just chose what I thought looked the best rather than consult army lists.

The totals are:

3 mounted leaders
2 units of spears (20 each)
1 unit of swords (20)
2 units of archers (30 each)
1 unit of lancers (10)
1 unit of horse archers (10)
5 Zoats
10 Dryads
4 Treemen (inc 'Durthu')
4 Great Eagles (inc 'Lord on Great Eagle' - one of my favourites)

A healthy start to the army. I'll finish it off...one day...

Hope you like the pics.
Cheers,
Mick

A thing of beauty! Great photos too, this is the sort of thing that made me fall in love with Warhammer and wargaming all those years ago.

Very impressive collection! It's amazing to see such a big old WE army today, and all well-painted too :) The plastic archers bring some memories... tears... ;)

Very nice indeed! Back when Wood Elves were sensible and wore armour :) I particularly like the way you've put the plastic Adv Heroquest Elf in with the plastic Regiments ones -- they work very well together. The shields on the Elven Lords are fantastic, too.

Wonderful army !
I love the way you've painted those old minis, and you have really an impressive collection of wood elves.

Beautiful, I especially like the light colours. The beige on the bases makes them look so cheerful. The friendliest looking army I've ever seen! :) The use of Zoats as well is genius.

Lovely army, must sort out mine to paint at some point. Think I have mostly the old grenadier wood elves though

Simply stunning.

Am I right in thinking this has all been collected recently ? as you say you were inspired by Masterworks guild amazing army. If that's the case I'm guessing your the reason I can't ever win an elf off of Ebay !!!
I notice you have no attack chariots is this likely to be remedied soon ?

I agree with every comment here so far... Simply stunning.

I look at my wood elf army and I think I need to somehow brighten it up a bit now! I have a couple more units that I haven't taken pictures for yet, but I've been in a bit of a lull recently.

I just need to keep visiting this forum for some great Oldhammer inspiration! Thankyou!

You still need a few more of these fellas... ;) (but in game terms the treemen are far more powerful!)

Thanks for the comments!

That's a lot of Zoats, Masterwork! I was lucky to get the ones I have. Got them as a lot from a bloke in Germany. I was always getting outbid on eBay and they go for around $40-50 each. It was your blog that inspired this so a personal 'thank you' to you. You can see the Zoat standard is a close copy of yours!

The HeroQuest Elf was a happy accident. It was part of a lot of figures I picked up. It was just put it aside as I had no idea what it was. Next to him, some of you may recognise the elf from the Firetop Mountain set. Again, I only worked out recently what these figures are. They had the right 'provenance' for the plastic elf archers and I thought it would be nice to give them a champion and a leader.

I have actually managed to collect 4 Attack Chariots  . I paid through the nose for one of them (still annoyed at my impulse buy!) and found a couple of good deals I couldn't resist. Have been collecting these for about 2 years, but apart from looking out for cavalry figures I've stopped buying elves, I've even got a few spares of my own now!. I started off buying up large lots of pretty much anything that was available and started organising them into units, then filled in gaps from there.

Apart from the cavalry and Zoats, I remove all the slotta tabs and stick the figures in epoxy putty on a magnetised base. I wanted the freedom to pose them better than the slotta bases allow. More work, but the results are worth it. The cavalry have 'proper' GW WE transfers. The leaf emblem on the sword unit was taken from the Internet and altered on Paint, printed then cut out. A couple of coats of gloss before the Dullcoat makes them look ok. The banners are again taken from the Internet (an old White Dwarf article) augmented the colours on Paint and printed. They add a bit of flavour, I think.

Cheers,
Mick

The old Wood Elves are some of my favourite classic models, and you have done a terrific job with these. Well done!
