My First Olhammer unit - Wood Elves

Early 90s Glade Guard I believe.
Still need to finish the shields, but basically done.
How's my first effort?

Cheers,
Mick

A very handsome looking unit. I've always liked the idea of Wood Elves but could never bring myself to paint that many distinct shades of green and brown, but you've done a fantastic job on them.

Beautiful paint-job.

I think the red background detracts from them so much tho.

Any chance you could post again with a dark green or light blue background?

Top work Mick, congratulations...they look proper early 90's :)

Not enough red, gotta have copious red bits to qualify as 90s look

Very nice look overall, great colour composition and base.

Wonderful job, really great especially for a first attempt you should be extremely proud, looking forward to your second sitting at the painting desk!

Re: My First Oldhammer unit - Wood Elves

Thanks for the encouraging comments!

I had a white background originally but it wasn't wide enough - oh well.
The idea is to give each unit a different theme colour so it should keep the army interesting.

If anyone has any spare kite shields like shown in the front of the picture, I would like to hear from you.

Are you using the kite shields for the entire unit, or just the champion/SB? Seeing as you've painted each trooper to such a high level, it would be a shame to hide it behind a kite shield, just thinking maybe a smaller round ones would work as well? The kite shield might be more aesthethically pleasing, but the round ones always seemed more organic to me...

Fantastic work by the way, like your intepretation of the bases, neat yet effective.

Re: My First Oldhammer unit - Wood Elves

Thanks.
Yeah I see your point Whitesun, the small round ones would be good too. I preferred the smaller kite/heater shields for the reasons you mentioned. It'll probably come down to whatever style I can get of hold of first.

The slotta tabs have been clipped off and I put them on some Tamiya modelling putty to set hard. They are quite solidly based. I'm not a fan of the bevelled GW bases or the restrictive positioning options (I mean, how dumb do the archers look all facing off to their left?!). Then I use a modelling paste (sometimes called texture paste) to stick on the sand and rocks before it gets painted.

After seeing these I went straight over to Stuff of Legends and then on to Ebay to see what I could find, which is probably the best complement I can give. If you live in UK have a look over on Wargames Foundry as they do a good selection on shields and I have bought their Kite shield for my dwarfs.

Just make some press moulds for the shields you want! Trying to get specific old shields is a bloody knightmare and it's easy enough to do a press mould with shields.
