Most Succesful Warhammer Armies

Are there any known stats on this? Has it come to your understanding that any Armies win statistically more than others?

Yes, armies with a good general (i.e. - the player) win more often than not, also painted armies attract good dice rolls FACT!!! (except your latest painted unit that attracts arrows, shot, bolt, cannon balls, rock and spell!)

I'm fairly sure no one's looked into the stats for this, as each army has its own strengths and weaknesses and there are too many variables to make it a worth while exercise. On the whole, its more a case of what do you want from the army your playing the game with - If I use my goblins on their own I never expect to win, but I can usually come away from the game with a smile on my face at the craziness that went on during it! If, I add the Orc's I can expect a more balanced game and thus result.

Horses for courses 8-) 8-) 8-)

It also depends on the rules system. Dark Elves used to be very good in WFB2/3 back in the day, not sure what they're like anymore but as the game was re-written so many times, each race would wax and wane with regard to how powerful they were when a new army book came out in later versions.

Except my Halfling Army. They were always terrible.

Would help if we knew which edition you're asking about.

which edition? well, surely the first seven editions ... perhaps the first eight ... - or even some overall "winner"

If were talking purely 3rd Edition I think that some armies are definitely better than others. Those armies that minimize psychology in my opinion have a leg up as it were. The reason is psychology tests can be so crippling like stupidity messing up a game.

The Five IMO would be:
1. Chaos. If you can get across the board intact the other side isn't going to stand a chance.
2. High Elves. You can run an entire dragon army with Dragonkin, that's cool just not practical. Aside from that a good mix of troops.
3. Undead. Fear is so powerful in third edition.
4. Dwarfs. Lots of artillery and if you are good with your ranges can be lethal.
5. Orcs and Goblins. With a caveat; yest the book says they are powerful army. Don't disagree but animosity can be a disaster if you roll bad.

The others have varying disagrees of usefulness or power, but some like Empire? There is nothing to special about them which I get is the point but will tend to die in droves, same with Brettonian to a degree.

YMMV.

Interesting point but regarding Dwaves and artillery is that Orcs and Goblins can have a lot more Artillery (especially stone throwers and even worse if you add in the 8 small stone throwers and Iron Claw stone throwers from white deaf articles).

One of the biggest strengths of Dwarfs is a relatively cheap 2 attacks with WS 5 and strength 5 (double handed weapons) unit in Hammeters.

Wood Elves.
Dont forget Wood Elves. I've never lost a battle with my Wood Elves in 3rd edition. And they faced Dwarfs, Chaos, Dark Elves, Skavens and the Empire.
