The Five IMO would be:
1. Chaos. If you can get across the board intact the other side isn't going to stand a chance.
2. High Elves. You can run an entire dragon army with Dragonkin, that's cool just not practical. Aside from that a good mix of troops.
3. Undead. Fear is so powerful in third edition.
4. Dwarfs. Lots of artillery and if you are good with your ranges can be lethal.
5. Orcs and Goblins. With a caveat; yest the book says they are powerful army. Don't disagree but animosity can be a disaster if you roll bad.
The others have varying disagrees of usefulness or power, but some like Empire? There is nothing to special about them which I get is the point but will tend to die in droves, same with Brettonian to a degree.
