Mindjammer's Cheeky Homage to 40k?

(I looked and didn't find another thread about this--apologies if there is already one!)

Thought you all might appreciate this:

Mindjammer – Children of Orion

You will kneel before the emperor—or die!
Welcome to the Bright Empire of Venu — the interstellar civilisation of the “bad guys” of Human Space! An ancient people of xenophobic human supremacists, survivors of an ancient war, now hellbent on cleansing the cosmos of abomination and bringing the purifying word of their undying God-Emperor to the stars.

Children of Orion—the Venu Sourcebook provides a whole new universe of adventure for your Mindjammer games — a harsh and violent interstellar empire beyond the Commonality frontier. Play rebels against the domineering rule of the God-Emperor, mutated troopers and servitors of the sinister Dark Radiance fighting against the cultural inroads of the Commonality — or Commonality agents themselves, working behind enemy lines to defeat an implacable foe which once devastated the Core Worlds! It’s a completely different vibe for your Mindjammer games—darker, more desperate, where the survival of an entire people is at stake.

(I have long had my own "cheeky homage to 40k's Imperium from an outsider's perspective" bubbling away in my head--so I'm curious to see how this reads.)

^Feels solid. I've been doing something maybe a tad similar on an on again-off again basis. Really need to get back to it. It's kind of one of the classic takes on things, I think.

personally.. I don't really see the Homage.. just the standard themes.. I'm probably being a bit dumb though..

"the interstellar civilisation of the “bad guys” of Human Space"
Is this something like Bored of the Rings but for Wh40k XD ?

Mindjammer is Sarah Newton's post-scarcity transhuman space opera -- think Iain M. Banks's Culture novels with added strange humanoid species and aliens. The "Commonality" are the the default option for PCs. There have been rulebooks for the setting in FATE and Mongoose Traveller.

As to the homage:
  • xenophobic human supremacists?
  • undying god-emperor?
  • "mutated troopers and servitors of the sinister Dark Radiance"

Maybe I'm making too much of it? Seems "close enough for jazz" to me.

They felt need to spell out the "bad guys" empire so it sounds like they are parodying 40k. Like "the interstellar civilisation of the “bad guys” of Human Space" sounds like something one would write only in a parody.
