Michaels 25mm WFB Stuff...

The template is cut.

There is a part of me that wants to make a full on playable diorama, big foam boards, sculpted terrain but there is the issue of storage.
Then there is a part of me that wants to make mini set pieces, like the farm and its various buildings, the various structures could be on one larger board that is all nice and pretty, but that means those structures would be stuck to that board.
Now, I have no plans on ever using these buildings for anything other than what they have been made for, but if I do stick them down onto a single set piece that is that.

So, a template which allows the individual buildings to slide into place that will be textured and built up to join them.

It is not as pretty but it solves the problems, plus it means that other buildings can make use of the template.

With the template cut, I cut some balsa strips and roughed up the edges and stuck them down as fence posts.
The main gate is wide enough to allow the Kleber and the cart on its base.

The smaller gate at the rear is big enough for a 20mm base to pass through.

It is a decent sized enclosed yard, it will house all manner of farming paraphernalia as well some goats and what not.

Possibly the obligatory Townscape outhouse loo too.

Then once happy with the fence post layout I cut and filed the edge of the template to make it slopped and match the buildigs.

Then the first layer of texture was added, with the area being so large compared to a 20mm base it was obvious that brush strokes would be visible, so a second layer was added that was more cart wheel tracks and muddy messed up footprints, just general signs of movement to make it less clearly brushed on.

The rest of the fence is next, then the gates...

🙋‍♂️Why balsa rather than something more robust like matchsticks or plasticard rod?

P.S. Congratulations on bagging the Talisman druid. Him and Ferndale Snart are personal favourites and, depending on your point of view, iconic or stereotypical.

I find balsa easier to work with and texture wise needs little doing to it in terms of woodifying it. Matchsticks would have worked, though possibly a bit too thin in this instance?*

I have a big supply of balsa, the fence posts are from 36" long strips, which are great as you can cut them to whatever length needed, matchsticks for doorframes as an example are too short and again a bit too weedy for my wants.*

*Maybe Cooks Matches would work?

Same with the beams on buildings and roof shingles and what not.
All cut from bigger sheets in my supply drawer.

Plasticard whilst clearly a much stronger affair would need to be textured to look like wood, and from what I recall of my sci-fi days, would also cost quite a bit more?

P.S. Congratulations on bagging the Talisman druid.

Thanks, I was looking around for the priest of Taal and a druid sprang to mind and that Talisman druid is evocative of druidy shizz whilst not being OTT like the later plastic one.

Ferndale Snart

Pray tell more, a quick search online revealed nowt.

oooh yeah I spotted that on my travels.
though I wanted a more serious dude for my priest.

But...
That would be perfect if I ever got round to a Stirland based Mordheim warband, as that has a drunk priest/cleric in it...
One to add to the ebay e-mail watchlist.

I did think about that, but the thought of hand making it put me off.
I have challenged myself that everything in the yard will be built from scratch.
The barells will be fun...

As for lore, well there be trees all over the place round these parts.
Uli the Dwarf sawed em down almost perfect like, most of the planks nearly fit.
