Hello fellow hammerers!
I have painted a fresh batch of undead to join my ever growing ranks. Granted, it's been a while since my last update but my army has been growing since April this year. I also bought a full colour led bulb which I've been happily experimenting with for the first time.
Here's my latest installment in full swing. There are eighteen skelliebobs (one of whom is mounted), five wizards, one vampire in bat form and a Jabberwock.
It all started with the SKelliebobs. These are a bunch of oldhammer themed skeletons sculpted by Drew Day Williams and sold by his own company Satyr Art Studio: https://satyrartstudio.ecwid.com/SKELLIEBOBS-c137016001
I bought the full range which you can see in this picture. The models were cleanly cast and supplied without bases. The tabs were way too thick to fit conventional slottabases and needed a lot of filing to fit.
The command models consist of a standard bearer, a drummer and a bagpiper. The musicians are really nice figures and would be great command figures for bare bones plastic skeleton units.
The standard is moulded and very very top heavy. I bent the figure to position the standard above the base the best I could, but it didn't save the model from receiving it's first chip before the first picture was taken. I think he would cause a lot of frustration on the battlefield when fielded.
I painted the banner with "Memento mori" ('remember that you [have to] die') and some 'vanitas' symbols (a candle, a skull and an hourglass).
Some of the models (like the bagpiper) have supports under their feet. I have by now chosen to keep these in place. I use my figures for gaming and a sturdy figure just feels a lot more comfortable to use. I painted these supports black and hid them with tufts.
I painted the skeletons as I do all my skeletons which works out to the following steps on models with no clothing and no verdigris parts:
1. black undercoat
2. drybrush VGC charred brown
3. drybrush VGC earth
4. drybrush VGC bone
5. Magic Color orange ink on iron parts
6. Army Painter dark tone (black wash) on iron and wooden parts
7. light VGC chainmail brush on iron parts
8. Army Painter strong tone on wooden parts
9. all done and ready for basing!

The skelliebobs are a range of naked skeletons meant to fit in with 80's figures. Being naked they reminded me most of the Marauder style skeletons, as most of the Citadel skeletons had lots of gear on them and usually one of four different skull designs. They have some character in their facial expressions and their bones seem a bit thicker than the Citadel skeletons from the 80's.
I particularly like the different archer poses.
The figures come supplied in a selection of typical weapons, not the least of which of course is the scythe. The different weapons give some nice different poses to add to existing units.
The skelliebob spearmen offer some nice prodding stances which remind of Citadel skeletons in a similar pose. Only one of them carries a shield.
Speaking of which, when I received the models my order was one shield short. As I wanted to paint these models as they are supplied and not use different shields. After contacting Drew he sent me the missing shield, along with a freebie.
The freebie was none other than...
A full blown Jabberwock! This is the Jabberwocky also sculpted by Drew for Old School Miniatures. It is available here:

Of course such a generous gift can not stay unpainted so I included him in this bunch and based him to match my army. I have already painted a Balrog so why not add a fish demon into the mix?
I went for a fishy look on this model and decided early on on a colour scheme inspired by the mackerel. I started by drybrushing it in metal colours (silver) and later added more colour with orange ink, green glaze and Tamiya Metallic Blue. I made the belly to look a bit fleshy by mixing in Citadel Elf flesh in the metal colours and later added some crimson glazing to bring out the colours.
I left the wing membranes mostly silver but did paint black spots on it.
At some point during my games of third edition I felt like I didn't have enough necromancers. I don't remember exactly why but it was probably because I fielded three of them and didn't like my selection of models enough.
Long story short I have been hovering up spellcasters and here are five of them.
The first is Savio Savini, named after special effects guru Tom Savini (because of the resemblance and because I'm a fan) and originally sold as Citadel C02 wizard Si Copath (1987), holding a heart and a knife.
His robes were inspired by those of Schema Monks, a pattern which seemed to fit the model well, even though I have used it before. I think it helps his evil look. I got this model through Facebook together with a bunch of other figures (wraiths, zombies and ghosts) which I have yet to paint.
In August I went to BOYL (Bring Out Your Lead) at Foundry, and I was gifted this great necromancer sculpted by Bob Olley. This was the 2022 BOYL figure and as such should never ever be sold. I was happy to have another necromancer anyway so he had to be painted.
I started by painting the red and white parts but then was afraid he would look too much like Santa Claus. So I painted the rest black and tried to make him look sick and evil. I also decorated his robes with mystical and satanic symbols.
It's not really legible but on the bottom of his robe is written 'mors vincit omnia' (death conquers all).
At BOYL I also bought two fantastic spellcasters which are variations of the same figure. On the left is a 'regular' necromancer, the figure in the middle is called Ghoultear (lovely name) and the model on the right is an old Metal Magic liche, included because of the uncanny resemblance to Ghoultear.

I painted the necromancer with a pentagram pattern on the robes. The others got straightforward clothing without patterns or symbols.
Here's a shot of the back. For the necromancer on the left I went for a leather look on the cloak, because the cloak is so much more worn down than his robe is.
BOYL was the gift that kept on giving as I was given this Metal Magic vampire in bat form (can't seem to find him in a catalogue) by the one and only Nergling! It's a nice addition to my army as I didn't have a model of this sort yet.
I painted him in natural looking colours (black brown and skin) and added the black spots on the wings to break them up and show the outlines better.
The back of the vampire was left black as I imagine him loking all black when hanging upside down with his wings folded around him.
