Looking for an Old(ish)hammer article in WD (~1997-2001)

Newer than many peoples' Oldhammer, but from a period I enjoyed... :)

I'm looking to figure out which issue of White Dwarf a certain article appeared in, and was hoping someone might be able to help me. (I've also posted to Facebook but I think visibility is probably longer on here.)

It was a Chaos army made up of Daemons of Khorne, I think painted with enamel paints, and I think solely in Khorne's colours (red, black, and brass) which gave it what I always thought was a striking appearance. I think the bases could have been black or mixed black and lava, but am not certain.

As a pure Daemon army, I think the earliest it could have been would be 1997, when 5th edition Warhammer was released (and the Chaos army book for that edition split them into separate forces). I stopped reading White Dwarf regularly in 2001, so it was almost certainly before the end of that year. This corresponds to issue numbers from the low to mid 200s. Sadly, it's hard to find contents for many White Dwarf issues from this period.

Does anyone else remember this army? If you're able to provide a scan of the article, or even confirm the issue number so I can search for a second-hand copy, you would have my honest gratitude. I'd love to look at the pictures of the army again.

They were gloss varnished weren't they? One of the few WDs I bought in that period but I'm afraid I can't remember the issue number either.

My index says WD219 contains "Raur'h Ghar's Daemonic Horde: A Daemonic army of Khorne, the Blood God (pictures of studio army)" which sounds like your best bet. Don't have the issue myself.

Thanks, guys. I should have said before: that's one of the issues I did find an index for, but someone on Facebook said it wasn't that article. However of course I don't have that issue myself so can't check. If one of you does have it and could look, it would be appreciated.

My phone isnt charged enough to get a pic, but I dont think these demons in wd219 are the ones you are looking for - it's pretty standard 5th ed flesh hounds in eavy metal green and red, and 1 unit of bloodletters. No obvious use of enamel, gloss or innovation...

Thanks, I think that is probably not them then!
We had another potential but probably false alarm for either issue 245 or 247 (also found an index saying there was a Khorne article, but the guy looked through the issue and said he thought it was not that army).

I loved that army. Really simple colour scheme with lots of fun models pressed into service as flesh hounds. Not something I'd personally put together, but really fun.

Update-thanks to Andy Hoare on Facebook, who sent a few snaps, we think it is issue 231. Off to eBay I go!

Lol, i just spent an hour sifting through issues 199-256 for you, no joy, then i check the thread again and see it is issue 231 - and lo and behold i have issues 229 and 232 but no 231 - if i had it you could have had it free.
Ah well, good luck finding it!

Yes, that's the one. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and looking. :) Ordered an issue on eBay now. Will have to try to recreate this look, I think.

I have a few ideas. I know I want to paint a few Khorne models in purely red, black, and brass. Not sure whether I'll try enamels, the other idea I had was painting the flesh using Tamiya Clear Red (so the skin looks bloody) and the blades with gloss varnish (since they were meant to be made of the void, I think). We'll see. Pictures is something else I am notoriously bad at getting around to. ;) Plus I am a proud heretic in that I like some of the new GW range of Daemons models, so probably won't recreate using 3rd/4th/5th ed pieces (although if anyone has some 4th ed Flesh Hounds they want to sell me...).

Only just saw this thread, mI remember that army, had a Lizard Man head or summat on a Bloodletter champion body.

A really nice looking army.

There are some nice conversions in that article but I find the colour scheme a bit samey. I'm also slightly aghast that between when I left "the GW hobby" in around 1992 and 1999 (it seems?) demons became a valid army choice, and what that says about the power levels and overall feel of the game.

In my day we walked uphill both ways through (Blood on the) Snow with a single magic weapon if you were lucky, and perhaps a wizard as backup

See, for me, I like the 'minimalist' colour scheme here. I think Daemons of Khorne is one of the few forces it 'works' for, though.

And I kind of agree with you about the 'daemonic incursion' type of army in WHFB and 40k. I much prefer a 'unified' Chaos force with mortal and immortal elements, unless I was playing a game set within the Realm of Chaos (and even then mortals have their place).

I´m surprised they published that article with the Grendel scenery in it (the fountains), would never have happened today.
Nice simple colourscheme of that army, work well with daemons.
