John Peel's Copy of Bolt Thrower's "Realm of Chaos"

So, this is up for sale at an upcoming auction of some of John Peel's record collection, which I stumbled across as I'm a huge fan of his and just thought people might be interested in seeing it.

Whilst I've got a copy, I've never seen the promo booklet, sadly the contents of it aren't photographed, but what's interesting is Earache sent John a copy of WD 119 as well! The handwritten notes denote the length of the track and how much he liked each track. Apparently he really liked 'All that Remains' and 'World Eater'.

Anyway, enjoy the photos, if you want to buy it I'm not bidding on it!

There are so many amazing alternative radio shows available freely online these days, but I really miss John’s voice and the eclectic selection he brought to the mainstream radio listener…
Tom Ravenscroft did a good job holding the torch on 6 Music, but he has left now.

There are thousands of hours of John Peel shows archived on the Mooo peel server if you want some sweet, sweet nostalgia.

No offense but..
Kenny Everett. No better DJ and kinda the first VDJ. It was wasn't for him, Queen wouldn't be popular. Also the amount of 'weird' stuff just cause he thought it was it was neat.. Can't beat Cuddly Ken (also, did you know he also kinda invented (though I think there were a few before in a small time way) the idea of a syndicated DJ? He would record radio links customised for a Local small time station so they could have Kenny Everett host a program on their station. Mostly the same for each one bit with that custom Radio Ident. Also a very early one do to the same kinda thing as a DJ for events like Football matches when you are waiting for Kickoff...)

Ah, side tracking too much..

I listened to John for his taste in music, and it's not a stretch to say that John Peel influenced my life more than any other 'famous' person. He introduced me to the bands I still love, the music scenes I got involved in (and am still a part of), and the band tours I followed all over the country in the early 90s. He literally changed my life, lol.

It's also fair to say he introduced the country to psychedelia, prog and then punk (and several other genres like hip hop, grindcore, acid house, and even jungle/drum n bass) at times when other radio shows wouldn't touch them, meaning almost every current band owes a debt to him in some way or other.

Incidentally, the first DJ to play Queen on the radio was... John Peel!

yes, they recorded a BBC session for the radio in 5th Feb 1973, which aired on Peel's BBC show 'Sound of the Seventies'. He got them back in about 77 but then on 'shunned' their work, claiming to refuse to air it (though did when Mercury died in 1991). Kenny wasn't on a commercial channel then, it wasn't till later (75) when he was on Captial records that he aired 'Bohemian Rhapsody' from a promo copy.

The BBC sessions were because they weren't happy with the delay of their first album (which they kinda half self-released). Technically, Session recordings, which were done.. well, a bit more promo then the standard 'air it on the radio to promo it' (long story I only known half of it). Though there are... rumours of a couple of local stations but these are very unknown.

While I don't know what lead to the fall out between Queen and Peel (though it's kinda known to do with 'if it's popular, I don't want to touch it', which is abandoned in later life), the Fallout between Mercury himself and Kenny is well known.. and is one of the things the Band love to censor these days (damn, Queen love to kill their own legend ¬_¬)

As I wasn't around in the 1960s for when some of them music fields came out (But I still wince when idiots claim punk, which technically stated in the 60s, was mid to late 70s ¬_¬).

I've always had a fair bit of a dis-like for most radios stations in the UK due to some of their policies.. like how many love to limit what music that will play.. not as bad as the USA which REALLY force but still.

I won't downplay some importance of people but too many things try to hype them up and forget some of the.. erm.. nasty stuff (like all his.. I think the safe term these days is just 'harmless Sexual misconduct' with minors and others..

Take it you have dabbled in a bit of Carcass over the years then?

Absolutely. I was into the first wave of grindcore/hardcore punk that Peel played in the mid-late 80s. I saw them on the Grindcrusher tour and a few other tours after that, I'm actually in the BBC Arena documentary about Extreme metal. You can just about see 16 year old me stagediving during one of the tracks!

ah, I remember when ones would steal artwork for commercial use.. damn.. I know that artist.. it's not Shigeru Mizuki but something reminds me of his work.. damn.. this is gonna bug me..

never really bothered with Dragon ball or any of the poorly translated anime versions... Didn't think he dealt with Yokai like an onibaba though..

If you like ambient moody stuff there's a Channel called Prometheus Studios that does 'grimdark' ambient 40k cathedral music. I'm sure it was called Prometheus Studios anyway, has been a while.

I listen to a lot of bardcore when painting Bretonnians.

I second the idea for a oldhammer adjacent music thread, or music and films.

^I don't mind it, but I was thinking it might not be bad to have a thread here with Oldhammer adjacent stuff in whatever style one found appropriate. It could be music referencing games or stories relevant to the genre, like Zep's Misty Mountain Hop or Bolt-Thower in general. It could be things one finds thematically appropriate, as background music to game by, or inspiration for games, like the soundtrack to Dune or Yoko Kano's Tank! out of Cowboy Bebop. Whatever style, so long as there's some meaning to you. Mind you, this is just an idea, and I'm not altogether sure where in the forum such a thing would belong.
