John Blanche inspired fly Galleon

This isn't a mini but I hope I can skirt the rules a little with the theme.

*edit* FLYING Galleon... not fly... sheesh...

I'm sure theres a few of you who remember this illustration.

I've been building a model based on it and planning on adding the crew soon. This is where I am at the moment.

It's built from a mix of styrene, cocktail sticks, coffee stirrers, and sculpted bits.

The main core is wood with styrene sheets cut to a rough shape. I then put a styrene skin on the ribs and then covered that in coffee stirrers.

This has made my day.
I'm running out of superlatives to describe the work on this forum, but that is something else.
Looking forward to seeing the scallywags who crew her.

Amazing. You've made my day. Well slight lie, if you;'d finished your post saying and now I plan to send the galleon to Eric that would have made my day :)
I really do have to try my hand at scratch building one of these, you've re-inspired me to have a go. Totally amazing work. Love it. Brilliant.

With regards to the crew, this is the first one that I'm painting tonight. He's going on the focsle with the other barrels when he's finished. I just need to get the somewhat shocked look off his face.

I say leave the shocked look on his face. Does my stance put a shocked look on your face?

He's in a flying ship of course he's shocked !!

I can remember seeing those pictures all those years ago in WD and its great to see how its inspired you to such an amazing project.

It's not balsa, it's coffee stirrers. I grabbed a load of them from my office pre-lockdown and have been using them for projects.

I used them recently for decking on a Kaptain Badrukk mini I painted to make a more interesting base for him.

Set sail me hearties! Splice the mainbrace! erm... poop the poop deck! and other nautical terms.

The sail is in place. Its an old linen bag that I cut to rough shape and PVA'd into place. I overdid the weathering a bit I think but I can tidy it up as I go.

Huh! Well then, I need to start stirring stuff into my coffee so I can discover these magical balsa-like planks. ;) Either way, they look great. Love the planks on the captain's base too. The loose nail is a great touch.

The sail and rigging got finished over the weekend and I was brave enough to risk some freehand work to make a flag. There is only one true Emperor of humanity and it's not that rotting corpse on the throne.

before i do, it occurred to me to ask what you used to secure them whilst they were still wet.

Sorry, I've been totally rubbish on coming back here and updating this thread. All of the notifications have been going in my spam folder.

I was using either wood glue or super glue to attach them and elastic bands or clamps to hold them in place.

Since I last posted an update, I've nearly finished this diorama. I've added crew.

and built the backdrop from foam that I carved up.

I also added some foliage to the base.

I'm currently adding little details to the base as well to expand it a bit, like this waterfall.

Just a few more bits to do and I'm calling it done.
